10 Butler’s Pantry Ideas

When I was a freshman in high school and cleaned house for Mrs. Ashby, I admired her butler’s pantry and told myself I would someday have one. Her service pantry was a small hallway between her kitchen and dining room and was the first one I had ever seen. She always had a bottle of brandy tucked by the small sink and drank her libation out of an English tea cup. Since then I’ve always been fascinated by butler’s pantries.

The butler’s pantry was a place for service staff to store the family’s silver and china under lock and key. Typically it was a small hallway or room between the kitchen and formal dining room.

This space was also used to stage meals back in the day.  In today’s world, we simply refer to them as a wet bar or a storage pantry.

Hubby and I were looking at model homes recently and were surprised to see the return of the butler’s pantry in several of the models.

I love this butler’s pantry tucked in a corner. From the cozy wine cabinet to the glass front cabinet doors, I think it has an understated charm. Plus I love that silver serving tray!

You could easily convert a closet space into a functional butler’s pantry like this one. It really wouldn’t be that hard to do.

This one has a bit of beautiful French Country style to it. I haven’t seen a butler’s pantry I don’t like, and I’m still waiting to have my own one day … just like Mrs. Ashby’s house … except mine will be stocked with a glass of wine instead of an English tea cup filled with brandy!

  1. Hi Jennifer,
I really love Butler’s Pantries, they are so lovely and yet so practical. I am fortunate enough to have a pantry cupboard in the kitchen. I don’t know what I would do without it as I have a small amount of storage space in my kitchen cupboards. A renovation would supply more storage but would eliminate the table in the kitchen and there is not another space for a table in the cottage.

    Take care,
    Kim

  2. Growing up in the poor side of town, as was everyone I knew also did . We lived in tenement houses, they all had a pantry, which was where the sink and overhead cupboards were. I would love to have the sink and more storage in a little room, you know a place to hide all those dirty dishes until the company leaves ( not seen). I wish…..

  3. I love ‘offices’ or butler’s pantries. We had one when we lived in a huge house and it was similar to the rich wood one here, as my kitchen was in rich wood too. I am partial to that look. When we remodeled our kitchen 4 years ago, here, in our pent house apartment; we redid it again in a beautiful custom wood cabinets replacing the white cabinets it had.
Thanks for sharing sweetie, they’re all gorgeous! Pinning.

  4. Hi Jennifer… I live in a really old house and one of my favorite parts of it is the butlers pantry. Works out well for my dish/plate obsession. Have a great day!
