Arranging Flowers with Teco Art Pottery

This post is sponsored by PrairieMod but all opinions are my own.

I feel like I’ve found a little treasure in my own backyard. My treasure combines a bit of local history with beautiful artistry. I’m talking about Teco Art Pottery by PrairieMod. This contemporary art pottery is a perfect complement for arranging flowers into pretty bouquets.

You might remember this cheerful zinnia arrangement from my recent family room post. The flowers are tucked inside the Roman Vase from the Teco Art Pottery collection.

“Teco” art pottery is an abbreviation of Terra Cotta, which was produced from 1899 through the 1920’s. The location of its production is less than 30 minutes from my house in Terra Cotta, Illinois. I love the history of this pottery and have three pieces to share with you today. But what’s even better … you can enter to win one of these vases for yourself!

From left to right is the Roman Vase, the Prairie Vase, and the Orb Vase. I love them equally with or without flowers.

Let’s start with the classic Roman Vase. I love the feel of it in my hands. It’s solid and smooth and wears the most beautiful shade of green. The opening is just the right size to fit one of the flower arranging pieces that you can add to mason jars. The little squares help to keep flowers in place.

Tips for Arranging Flowers

An important tip when arranging flowers is to remove any foliage below the water line. Otherwise the greenery starts to decay in the water and makes it smell a little funky. You also want to make sure you cut the bottom of the stem off at a slight angle so the flower can readily soak up the water.

Flower Arranging Tips for Beautiful Bouquets

I don’t follow any hard and fast rules when it comes to arranging flowers. Arranging flowers is as simple as choosing a color scheme, cutting a few stems, and then placing flowers in the vase. I think it’s easiest if you start with the biggest flowers or the tallest flowers first. Make sure you vary the height of your stems. Here’s my Roman Vase arrangement about halfway done. I’ve included a mix of fall flowers, berries, and foliage.

Keep adding stems, eyeing the bouquet as you continue working. It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, I prefer a bit of a messy flower arrangement over the perfectly coiffed bouquets you see in the store. Sometimes I like the flowers to look like you just picked them fresh from a field and tucked them right into the vase.

For the Prairie Vase, I opted for a simpler red theme. This vase is more narrow than the Roman Vase so I didn’t use as many stems.

Aren’t the little red berries exquisite?  I found these at the grocery store but if you have branches of them in your yard, save the money and cut your own. My Burning Bushes get tiny berries but they’re not out yet and the branches haven’t turned red yet.

Arranging flowers with berries and sprays like this would be pretty at Christmas, too.

To complete the look of my little vignette with the Prairie Vase, I included vintage red books, a white ironstone creamer, and a white bumpy gourd.

And finally … the Orb Vase. I created two flower arrangements in this piece. The first is a simple bouquet of hydrangeas from my bush in the backyard. That bush was taking on a life of its own, reminiscent of Little Shop of Horrors. I finally pruned it back a bit now that the blooms are fading.

Teco Art Pottery - the Orb Vase

Because of the round shape of the Orb Vase, I felt a mounded arrangement of white mums, snap dragons, and creamy zinnias would balance the orb shape. Although … I think a tabletop Christmas tree will look really cute in this vase during the holidays.

Be sure to visit PrairieMod to see their entire collection of pottery and home decor. The pottery is really quite spectacular and I think the Rocket Vase is next on my list.
