Summer Decorating in a Farmhouse Dining Room

We've been having some fabulous weather here in the Midwest ... enough rain for the garden and plenty of sunshine to enjoy. Of course, this means the weeds are growing like gangbusters and in order for me to get out in the garden as much as possible, I need to simplify things indoors. As part of my summer decorating routine, I've edited vignettes so there's less to dust and clean. To add a bit of color, I hung a vintage hankie banner onto the … [Read more...]

My Experience Being Published in an Italian Decor Magazine

Less than 2 months ago I received an email from Annarita Triarico, an Italian journalist working for Lotus Publishing. She wanted to feature my home in one of their magazines, "Gli Speciali di Casa Chic."  At first I thought it was a joke, but I looked at their publishing site and realized it was a legitimate request. Unfortunately, this magazine is not for sale in the United States, but I'll receive several hard copies of my own. As you'll see … [Read more...]

Dealing with a Quirky Living Room

Ever since we moved into our circa 1875 house sixteen years ago, I've struggled with the living room. It's somewhat long and narrow and has a lot of doorways in it. It's stuck in the center of the floor plan so you really have to think about traffic patterns in this room. The living room is joined to the family room on the left, with a door to the laundry room on the right. To get from any room to the staircase, you have to walk through the … [Read more...]

Christmas in the Family Room

As we get closer to Christmas, I've been showing more details of each room that's been decorated. Today I'm sharing the family room. I'm saving the Christmas tree in the living room for last, although I showed one pic of it in my Holiday Home Tour post. Anywho ... on to the family room. Sticking with my "Keep It Simple Stupid" theme this year, I didn't get too fussy with the decorating in here. In fact, I used a couple kitties to decorate. My … [Read more...]

End of Summer Day at the Lake

This past Wednesday I had the pleasure of going to my boss' lake house in Wisconsin. Every year he appoints one week where groups of employees go to his lake house for the day. Did I mention we get paid for this day of boating and leisure? It's true! I work as marketing communications manager for Aquascape, a company that manufactures pond supplies and distributes them worldwide. We also install beautiful water features around the Chicago area … [Read more...]
