Simple Christmas Decorating Ideas

After all the decorating for Tuesday's Christmas home tour, I've been taking it easy the last couple of days and enjoying all the other Holiday Housewalk tours happening this week. I thought I'd share a few simple Christmas decorating ideas using some of my photos that didn't make it into my home tour earlier this week. In my farmhouse kitchen I added touches of red and green throughout. Red pomegranates are an easy way to add Christmas color … [Read more...]

In Search of the Perfect Kitchen Table

Hubby and I have been casually searching for the perfect kitchen table. There's nothing really wrong with our current table ... I'd just like something that's not completely painted. Maybe a rustic wood table top with painted legs. I found some inspiration surfing through the pages of Houzz. Rustic Kitchen by Menlo Park Home Builders Markay Johnson Construction This table has a bare looking finish to it, meaning it's not highly varnished and … [Read more...]

Updated Farmhouse Kitchen Tour

Sometimes I get tired of looking at my own blog and I've decided it's time for some updates. The first change I'm making is to update my home tour.  Each room will eventually be listed in the menu under "Home Tour" above. Today I'm starting with my farmhouse kitchen tour. Following are a few snippets of the kitchen ... I chose a white and cream color scheme so that I could add a variety of colors throughout the season.   We've made … [Read more...]

Snow, snow, go away! I'm trying to push away winter by adding bits of spring decorating throughout our home, and I went all out in our farmhouse kitchen nook. This week I'm joining some beautiful bloggers in the Seasons of Home Spring Tour ... aka "Blooming with Color." Bluebells in Our Farmhouse Kitchen

One of my favorite decorating tricks is to bring fresh flowers into our farmhouse kitchen, dining room, and every other room under our metal roof! Last week the daffodils were in bloom and I brought a big bouquet of their sunshine inside. This week the flowerbeds are filled with bunches of blue ... Virginia Bluebells, that is. This beautiful-hued perennial is quite prolific, spreading itself throughout the garden a bit more each year.  Excited … [Read more...]

A French Lamb Sign for My Farmhouse Kitchen

For the longest time I've been on the hunt for a cow picture for the kitchen. Since I want to keep a farmhouse feel in this part of the house, what better way to accomplish this than with a farm animal? I found lots of beautiful cow paintings for hundreds of dollars but as usual, I was looking for a bargain ... and I found one!  But when given the option of choosing a cow, lamb or pig ... in the end I opted for the lamb. The lamb picture has … [Read more...]

Embracing the Farmhouse Kitchen

When I think of farmhouse kitchens, I think of my grandmother and also Aunt Bee from the Andy Griffith Show. Remember the episode when Aunt Bee and Clara entered the pickle contest and Aunt Bee's pickles tasted like kerosene? Just like Aunt Bee's kitchen, my grandmother's was simple yet comfortable. It's where all the important conversations of the day took place. Her kitchen was truly the heart of her home, which is the same characteristic I try … [Read more...]

My Experience Being Published in an Italian Decor Magazine

Less than 2 months ago I received an email from Annarita Triarico, an Italian journalist working for Lotus Publishing. She wanted to feature my home in one of their magazines, "Gli Speciali di Casa Chic."  At first I thought it was a joke, but I looked at their publishing site and realized it was a legitimate request. Unfortunately, this magazine is not for sale in the United States, but I'll receive several hard copies of my own. As you'll see … [Read more...]

Adding Natural Texture in the Kitchen

For the most part, my kitchen is white. Some people think a white kitchen is cold, sterile, and even boring. In my opinion, a white kitchen looks clean, bright, and airy. Don't get me wrong - I like kitchens with color in them. I just prefer to live with a white one so I can add pops of varying colors depending on my mood or the season. Lately I'm more mindful of adding texture in my home and I think natural textures are a great way to add warmth … [Read more...]

Next Steps for the Kitchen

After posting "before" photos of my kitchen, I decided I kinda liked the way it looked as is. Plus ya'll gave me such wonderful feedback that it made me think twice before doing anything drastic (funny how popular opinion can change your mind). I just finished painting the ceiling, walls, bead board and trim this week ... keeping everything pretty much the same color. Sometimes a fresh coat of paint can brighten a room. The walls are now a paler … [Read more...]
