11 Unique Wall Decor Ideas for Every Room

Have you ever struggled with what to hang on a wall that will give your room character and personality? Rather than settle for a reproduction print, why not try something a little more outside the box? Here are some of my favorite wall décor ideas that you can use in any room.

1. Plates on a Wall

Rather than hang a picture on a kitchen or dining room wall, why not display some of your favorite plates? Mismatched vintage plates or a prized set of pewter plates are a great way to get these beauties out of the cupboard and out where everyone can see and enjoy them.

2. Hang Your Favorite Baskets

Baskets are an ideal solution if you’re looking for unique wall decor. First, they’re inexpensive. You can find tons of them at resale shops, and most resale shops support a local charity so you can feel good about your purchase. And second, they’re lightweight and easy to hang.

3. Elevate Your Flower Arrangement to the Wall

Ever since I saw this basket of dried flowers on the wall at Randolph Cottage, I’ve been looking for a similar basket in order the create a similar look. I like the organic vibe it brings to the room.

4. Create a Gallery Wall of Prized Art

It’s common to see gallery walls of family photos, but have you ever thought of grouping prized artwork together? Each painting would look beautiful on its own, but grouping them makes a truly impressive visual impact.

5. Decorate with Maps

I’ve talked about using maps as wall decor before, and I still like the idea. You can find relatively inexpensive maps – framed or unframed – and use them as an alternative to canvas art. This one has a vintage feel which is perfect for the country style dining room.

6. Hang Straw Hats

Similar to the look of baskets on the wall, straw hats are another easy and inexpensive option for wall decor. In my first home, I hung a collection of hats one wall in my bedroom. I still love that look and may need to recreate it in my current bedroom.

7. Splurge on a Hand-painted Mural

This look might not be for everyone, but what an impact a mural makes in any room. If you can’t afford an artist to paint one, you can opt for some of the wallpaper murals available today

8. Display Your Favorite Collectibles

An awkward space in a kitchen gets an upgrade with a collection of antique paddle boards. Create a similar look with bread boards or cutting boards – used or new!

9. Get Creative with an Architectural Element

This wall treatment is easily created with small strips of wood applied in a geometric pattern to the wall. Then, the whole space is painted in one color. Leave it free of pictures.

`10. Hang One Large Graphic Element

When you have wall space to spare, use one large piece of art for a clean and uncluttered look. Yes, you could hang several pictures above the bed, but this graphic element with a whimsical quote makes a fun statement.

11. Don’t Forget Your Outside Walls

How fun is this garden dining spot with vintage bird cages hanging on a stone wall? Create a similar look on a fence or the wall of a garden shed.

Have you tried any of these wall décor treatments in your home? It’s fun to play with new looks and give a room fresh appeal. Not to mention, changing things up is a good opportunity to add your personality to your home.

  1. I’m kind of like you in liking to bring the outside in. My weakness is antique or vintage metal/iron wall plant holders. I like to set up vignettes in them using found objects and greenery, or florals, or whatever. I change them out seasonally.

  2. Jennifer, I want to tell you how much I love your blog. I look forward to your email everyday, but I hold off on opening the email until toward the end of my day, it is my dessert for the day. I am retired and following many design blogs which I view throughout the day, but always save yours until later, something I look forward to. Thank you for all you ideas, most match the style I attempt in my condo.

  3. You always show such great ideas! The other day when you had the link to English Cottage Decorating there was a beautiful blue and white check sofa – any ideas where to find something like that? Also, a few weeks ago you said you were going to look for little lace curtains like they use in an English cottage – did you have any luck with that and do you have a source? I guess you can tell I am obsessed with the English cottage look!!! Thank you!

  4. I really like the large basket with the flowers and the hats are great. I may do that with my different straw hats. Thanks for the idea.

  5. I love all of these ideas as I am someone who likes a good collection on display. As I have aged I have edited what I own, mainly to cut down on the cleaning but my heart is still in a gallery wall or plate collection. As always thanks for sharing, Jennifer.
