Charming Home Tour ~ The American Foursquare

The American Foursquare house was a popular mail-order home from the mid 1890s to the mid 30s and was a reaction to the ornate Victorian period. The foursquare home incorporated elements of Prairie or Craftsman style. Today’s charming home tour showcases a beautiful American Foursquare called the Park Hill House.

Green rattan porch furniture with accents of red greet you on the wide front porch.

An impressive fireplace with custom molding takes center stage in the yellow and white living room. Stripes on the window valances echo the wood strips on the ceiling. More stripes are captures on the pillows.

Beautiful built-ins hug the large window at the far end of the dining room, revealing the home’s craftsman roots. They just don’t build ’em like this anymore.

Traditional Kitchen

This American Foursquare’s kitchen wears cottage appeal with white painted cabinets, subway tile, bead board on the ceiling, and an old fashioned school light.

Breakfast Nook

On the other side of the kitchen is this adorable little breakfast nook. The windows have been given a subtle two-tone treatment and let in plenty of natural light. What a cheery space to enjoy your first meal of the day.

The foyer boasts natural wood work and a wide staircase. Custom molding finds its way up the staircase.

A cozy office space has rich, warm wood giving it the feel of a library. A patterned rug on the floor lends a bit of color while a steamer trunk acts as a charming coffee table.

A twin bed is tucked into a small bedroom wrapped in windows and bead board. This charming home has so many architectural details that make it truly special.

Soft blues create a serene bedroom with a built-in shelving unit that hides any clutter with mini doors.

Traditional Spaces

Mission furniture enhances the craftsman style of this historic home.

I love the attention to details like the topography map on the wall and the collectibles on the dresser. Vintage boxes, old bowling pins, aqua pottery, and a large metal star creates a beautiful vignette.

Traditional Patio

Back outside, the patio is graced with vintage porch furniture dressed in cheery, striped cushions and pillows. The wrought iron table adds a feminine touch!

  1. Oh my, I know we all say we love small and cozy. Really! look at all that room….love the kitchen cupboards and the nook. I will go back now and dream over every picture.

  2. I so love 4-Squares! So close to buying one in Dekalb. . Happy I came to my senses and realized their real estate agent was hinting that there was more that the home owners were not disclosing. Still think of that large kitchen and attic and dream of the views of never ending corn fields.
