Cozy Cottages in Batavia

Since my teens I’ve had a passionate love affair with old houses. Doesn’t matter if they’re large or small … I love ’em all. When I was first married my mom and I would go for walks in historic districts, looking at the homes and sharing ideas on how we’d transform them if we lived there. Now mom is too old for long walks, so hubby has taken her place on these architectural outings. This past weekend was unusually warm in the Chicago ‘burbs, so we headed on over to Batavia for a photo opp of her numerous old homes. This week, the focus was cozy cottages.

An unexpected purple door is flanked by a blue, iron mailbox. {Love!}
I’d remove those evergreen trees – they block a wonderful window.
A porch swing, garden flag, and flower boxes awaiting posies are poised to greet visitors.
A red reflective globe adds whimsy by the back porch windows.
Love the lampost by the front walk and the charming details of the front porch windows.
Did you notice the trim above the rest of the windows and the little green mailbox?
Hubby didn’t know why I took a photo of this house, but I think it’s adorable!
Flowerboxes here and there, unique porch trim, and little green steps to greet you.
Do you like blue houses? I love them! Always have, always will.
Or how about red? Would you live in a red house?
I love the two-tone window trim … and did you spy the vintage glider on the porch?
Of course, there’s always green. What’s great about an older home that hasn’t been sided in vinyl,
is that you can change its personality with a coat of paint. Oh … those arched windows and front door!
If neutrals are more your style, perhaps you’d prefer this charmer with a brick walkway.
Did you see the lamppost and scalloped shades in the lower windows? Too cute!
Here’s a cutie for you bungalow lovers out there. The east side with a lovely trellised arch and darling dormers …
The north side (another brick walkway and more flower boxes) …
And the west side. I wonder if that little door on the right leads into the kitchen?
I wanted to get a picture of this adorable yellow fire hydrant, and as luck would have it,
these furry fellas came by at the right moment. Their owner was gracious enough to let me click their pic.
Crocuses were popping up all over the charming yards of this quaint, suburban town.
We’ll be returning to Batavia for future photo opps.  Many streets with more historic homes await our next visit.

  1. Hi Jennifer!

I LOVE old houses because they have so much character. I also like that they are painted in so many different colors. Brick houses in the South and the stucco house here in the desert are all basically the same.

These houses look nice now… just think how wonderful the will look when all the trees and flowers are in bloom!

  6. love the flowers peeking out. I will have to take a tour of Batavia next time I’m in Naperville visiting my daughter. I loved Batavia when I lived in the area way back when. Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures with us.

  7. Lovely homes in your town. Michelle- how fun, you live there too! I’d show you Robertsville but we only have a fire house, a car shop, the paramedics and a dollar general. That’s it. The other little town I border has a gas station, a couple of churches and a couple of bars. The churches used to win out but one moved.

  8. I love older homes. You photographed many beautiful ones.I have never lived in a older home.Never even as a child.I always had a new home.Someday I would LOVE to live in a historically older home.

  13. I love old homes also. We have lots here. Unfortunately some are being torn down for modern homes, condos, townhouses, etc. BUT there are quite a few that people are restoring thankfully, they just add so much charm to an area.

OH and YES I would definitely live in a red house.

    Thank you for sharing.

  21. You and me both! I love old anything really but I do have a thing for old houses especially when they haven’t modernized them too much and kept the character.
I miss that down here. Not too many 2 story homes here unless you go to Batesville about an hour away. Here it is all ranch homes which I really don’t care for…mine included! LOL! You live in an area that is house heaven!
