Creating a Spring and Summer Farmhouse Theme

Have you ever felt a little lost when decorating your home if there’s no holiday in the near future to focus on?  Seems I feel this way every time Easter is over. I mean, it’s easy decorating for Christmas, Valentines, and then Easter. But once the Easter Bunny hops his way outta town … what’s next? Fourth of July is too far away to focus on a patriotic theme. So I’ve decided to create my own theme to take my home through the spring and summer months.

French VignettePlants will play a big role in my new spring and summer farmhouse theme and plant choice is critical to lending the right touch. Tropical plants look more exotic while a simple Ivy is better for a cottage look.

Myrtle TopiaryA myrtle topiary lends an architectural element that isn’t too formal or fussy.

Ivy in a ClocheThe wire cloche is a recent find. The English Ivy stretches out adding softness to the vignette.  A small bird is perched on the top of the wire cloche and is another element of my spring and summer farmhouse theme. Some of the first signs of spring include birds. In Illinois, we watch for the return of the Robin in mid-March. As the weather warms, you can enjoy the many songs being sung by local birds.

Iron Bird BellA rusty white iron bird bell sits atop a small stack of old books. The bottom book is “The Farmhouse.”  Appropriate, don’t you think? Don’t tell, but I haven’t read it yet.

White Iron BirdEggs and birds just go together so it doesn’t bother me that eggs are still out even though Easter is over. Now’s the time when the robins are feathering their nests and laying their lovely blue eggs. Every week we’re seeing another variety of bird returning to the yard.

Eggs in an Aqua Bottle Beautiful bird eggs in a variety of colors … a sign of life to come.

White Ironstone Pitchers In addition to little birds and simple greenery, the other element I’m adding to my spring and summer farmhouse theme is white ironstone. To me, nothing says farmhouse more than simple white dishes.

White Ironstone PitchersWhite ironstone is so elegant in its simplicity.

White Ironstone PitchersNotice how each pitcher in this trio has a different hue. The smallest one matches the color of the grosgrain ribbon holding the eucalyptus wreath below. I love all the slight nuances of ironstone. I even enjoy the pieces with crazing and age spots.

White Ironstone Pitchers Today I found several pieces of white ironstone at the flea market for a bargain price, but that will be a post for another day. I’ve also got a few more plants and will be mixing them up with the ironstone so stay tuned!

  1. Aaahhh what to do after the bunny leaves town?? 🙂 Was asked that a few days ago by a friend. Well, I don’t do much in the way of Easter decorating … After Christmas I must say the house does seem a bit sparse and naked. But I bring out ‘winter ‘ hues… tarnished silver , cozy things.
That stays up until March, as I am afraid I am not a Valentines day decorator either ( don’t hate) … But I am all about spring and the lightening up of things… taking away the winter wear, bring on the pale and light.. The soft cotton throws in place of the knitted afghans. The ironstone and whites…. In April, I add some sea shells, after all I do live in Florida 🙂 This takes me clear through summer. I tweak as I go along.
I luv your collection of ironstone pitchers!!!!
    Hugs, Gee

  4. I love the pretty farmhouse feel you’ve achieved with just a few cute pieces…very nice vignettes! I am so in love with that chippy bird bell! Great job. Now, come on spring!

  5. Your kitchen looks nice and fresh for the upcoming seasons. I left some eggs and birds around too but in June I will get out my seaside themed things – shells, etc. for the summer months. I love the seaside and since we are only 2 hours away from it I feel I can use it in my decor. In fact, my bathroom is seaside style all year around. I like your blue bottle with the eggs in it. Now we just need more spring weather don’t we.

  6. Congrats on your ironstone find! Spring and summer are all about birds, eggs, and nests for me, too. What lovely vignettes. I especially love your pedestal stand and cloche. Charming!

  7. What a great idea for a theme – you’re off to a great start! I can hardly wait to see the new ironstone. 🙂
    Happy Spring, Karen

  8. I love the beautiful simplicity that whispers throughout your sweet home, Jennifer. It’s such a peaceful, serene feeling. Sounds like you’re just as happy that spring has finally arrived as I am! 🙂 I even got to spend a couple days out in the gardens this week cleaning and pruning – while listening to the birds calling to each other. Yay!

  9. I’m with you, Jennifer. I’ve started putting out the greenery, albeit faux since I have a wicked black thumb, as well as cloches, birds and white ironstone as well. Did you go the the Kane County Flea? I missed it, but am looking forward to May’s!

    xoxo

  11. My house is still full of spring additions which include quite a few assorted egg decorations all far to nice to put away yet – love your beautiful images x

  12. I love your theme, Jennifer ~ I’ve been feeling the bug to add a few new accessories to freshen things up. I like your idea of adding some plants so I’ll have to be on the hunt for some with the cottage charm we love!

  13. Lovely spring decorations. I left my eggs out too..painted them tiffany blue & decided they could stay for a bit 🙂

  14. Loving the brightness of your spring decorating touches! I have the same little hanging basket you have hanging on your peg-love the wooden spoons in it!

  15. Everything looks fresh and springy. Love the wire cloche and the sweet birds.

I count the space between holidays as my “every day decor” time. I just brought out our shell collection, beach buckets and buoys. They will remain on the mantel until Memorial Day.

Hope your section of the country is finally getting spring weather.

  16. The 3 pitchers are just beautiful. I love that they are useful too — I have one pretty pitcher, but when I have parties and want to serve several drink options, I need more. Being able to display them beautifully would give me an excuse to buy a couple more! My husband thanks you!! haha 🙂

  17. Looks like you pulled everything together just fine, love it!
I don’t think one can go wrong with plants and birds, two of my favorite things.
I tend to just wait it out until July 4th, no decorating for any reason/season after the long haul from Halloween thru Easter.
    Thanks for sharing.
