Flea Market Stools for the Kitchen

Every kitchen island needs a couple stools where friends can sit and hang out while you finish preparing morsels of tasty goodness. My kitchen island had no stools and I didn’t want to buy anything new. As luck would have it, I found two matching stools on two separate occasions at the local flea market. They were painted differently so I had to give them a makeover. Here’s what they look liked after redoing them …

Old Ochre from Annie Sloan Chalk Paint was the color of choice.
It’s such a great color to pair with vintage script paper, book paper, or music sheets.
I chose a black and off white French toile for this project,
since I want to infuse Frenchy goodness into my kitchen.
And here’s the before. I found the stool on the right back in March at the Kane County Flea Market.
A month later, I found the one on the left, also at the Kane County Flea Market.
Different vendors, but when I saw the second one, I was pretty sure it matched the white one.
I recently picked up these French dish towels (can’t remember where).
The towels are the color and style inspiration for re-doing the kitchen this summer.
Not an entire makeover, just a color and slight decor change is all.
After painting both kitchen stools in Old Ochre, I distressed them slightly and applied clear wax.
The toile scrapbook paper is from Michaels (just 59 cents per sheet).
One sheet didn’t cover the entire top of the stool, so I got to cutting pieces, matching the curves.
Using Mod Podge, I glued the pieces to the tops of each stool.
I kinda used a crazy quilt type approach  for the pieces, placing them at different angles.
After all the pieces were applied with Mod Podge and dried, I brushed Mod Podge over the top.
I’ve always loved toile and this paper reminds me of some of the toile fabrics I’ve seen.
I love all the details in this paper. I need to buy more and decoupage some boxes.
From mismatch, to a pleasing pair.
Well, at least I think they’re pleasing.  {smile}
Total cost was under $30 for the pair, since I already had the paint on hand.
Next on the to-do list … choosing the paint color for the kitchen walls.
