Skinny Armoire Makeover

About a year ago I scored an old skinny armoire for $40. It’s a great piece of furniture because it doesn’t take up much space. Although I loved the dark wood, it felt a little ho-hum to me. After all the fun I had painting and decoupaging my desk (check it out here), I decided to apply the same technique to my skinny armoire, using a blue script paper from Michael’

The desk is in a different room so I didn’t think this would be decoupage overkill.

I snuggled it between my tulle and dropcloth curtains in the family room (which you can see here).

Hubby removed the door and hardware.
I brushed on two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Pure White.

Mod Podge was applied to the door insets and the paper placed in a haphazard pattern.

I added some French graphics from who else but the The Graphics Fairy.

Hubby likes this post card graphic best.
After all paper was applied, I spread a coat of Mod Podge over the top.
(Honestly, I didn’t even know about Mod Podge until just a few months ago. Love it!)

For the top, I decided to do something different and added a wooden applique from Lowe’s.
I used the same Pure White ASCP, applied clear wax followed by just a touch of dark wax.

I chose spray adhesive to apply it.
The spray adhesive allows opportunity to move it around as needed.

After the Mod Podge was complete, I rubbed Annie Sloan clear wax over the painted areas.
Just a few more things to re-do in the family room.
Working on another cabinet, a blanket chest, and a wall of vintage mirrors.
Photos of the finished room will be posted in the near future.

  1. A tall cabinet to redo is on my wish list for this summer. I have a spot I always wanted a grandfather clock for, but I have given up on that.

  2. Love love love that robin’s egg blue script paper! It goes so well with the ASCP white. I’m in the middle of a bench redo and I’m afraid I’ve taken on too much…you give me confidence! Can’t wait to see the rest of the room!

  3. Hi Jennifer,
It looks so cute! I love how you used the scrapbook paper for the inserts, it really makes it pop.
I totally forgot it was Flea market weekend. I went to Genoa for the day to some shoppes. Did you go, how was it? Have a blessed Easter.

  4. Jennifer, your cabinet looks great! I have got to get my hands on some chalk paint. I just inherited a small maple desk, and I was thinking about using white latex, but white chalk paint would definitely be a better look. Love your decoupaging too!

  5. This is such a beautiful piece. I will be on the look out for a skinny armoire. Who knew it could be so gorgeous. It’s the perfect touch. Thank you for this wonderful post! I would love it if you would share this at our What’s It Wednesday blog party. Hope to see you there.

  6. I love the size of your armoire. It’s perfect for the corner of a room…something I’ve been wanting for my dining room for years. The makeover you gave it really gives it a fresh and modern look. Who would ever guess it originally cost $40?!
