15 Red Houses in a Variety of Styles

In the spirit of Christmas I have a collection of 15 red houses in a range of sizes and styles. For some reason I’ve always been drawn to homes with red exteriors. I prefer houses of color as opposed to neutral tones like white or taupe. Ultimately, I think a house tells you what color it should be – and sometimes a neutral color is best. But in today’s post, red is the color of the day.

Above, a small cottage is nestled in the Scandinavian woods. Many country houses in Sweden and Norway are painted red. Can you imagine a village of red houses nestled in the snow? It would make the perfect Christmas scene.

Below, a red Victorian wears cream trim and shutters. It’s a classic color combination.

A more modern home pairs vertical red siding with natural stone work. The result is a handsome home with great curb appeal.

It’s not often you see a ranch home painted red, but this one looks pretty with all the green trees nearby.

Here’s another quaint Swedish home, flying the country’s flag.

Here’s more red houses in the countryside of Sweden. I like the unique fence in the first photo.

I love this modern farmhouse with round windows and bold pillars. You can see from the front door through the back of the house which looks like it’s situated on a lake.

This expansive home proves that even a large house looks good in a bold color like red.

And last in today’s collection of red houses is a two-story colonial style home with a second story balcony. It looks like there’s a rabbit on the weathervane.

Do you have any favorites among these houses? There are so many pretty examples, it’s hard to choose.

  1. We visited Sweden many years ago and took a wonderful train ride through the winter countryside. Those little red homes in the snow looked like something out of a fairy tale. Just beautiful. I have always been fond of red houses having grown up in a red cape cod style house in Connecticut. Thankyou for the lovely photos.

  2. What cheerful homes. Especially nice in winter or rainy weather. I pinned a house I saw online that I instantly fell in love with. It was more of a raspberry, but so pretty. LOL, the homeowners board would not allow a red or raspberry home where we are, but we were able to paint a pretty blue/green/grayish tone that looks nice.

  3. You found some really different red homes, such a great assortment. It was hard to pick just one. I think 2,8, and 10 were some really cute houses.

  4. There is nothing more appealing to me than a red house, especially when the style and color are complimentary. Thanks for featuring such great examples!

  5. My husband and I toured the copper mine in Falun ( pronounced “fallen” ) , where the red paint ( Falu red ) is made. I was able to buy two small containers of it to bring back home with me, and my husband used it to paint one of our birdhouses. I now feel I have a bit of Sweden in my yard.
One of my wishes prior to going to Sweden was to see some of the red houses. I wasn’t disappointed, they are everywhere 💕
Different shades of yellow was also very popular and very pretty.
You can tell the Swedish take pride in their homes.
I sent you an email, or possibly two 😆 containing an article from the Smithsonian Magazine about the red homes in Sweden. I hope you received it. ( them😆 )
