How to Choose Bedding to Create a Beautiful Bedroom

Days are growing shorter and nights are getting cooler during this beautiful autumn season. It makes you look forward to curling up in bed at the end of the day. One of the easiest ways to fluff up your bed is with new linens. Here’s how to choose bedding to make your nights soft and dreamy. Hopefully this little luxury will help you sleep better, too. Choose Bedding in Warm Colors

Add a little warmth to your bedroom by choosing a blanket or quilt in a warm color. This avoids having to buy a whole new set of bedding in a new color. Toss in a few pillows of the same color to make an even bigger impact. If your budget allows, you can add a small area rug, too.

Coral isn’t a color often chosen for a bedroom, but I loved the coral bedspread and pillow shams I chose for my farmhouse bedroom several years ago. Coral looks pretty with gray or navy.

Create Serenity with Blue Bedding

Blue is a restful hue and perfect for any bedroom. Mix blue with white linens for a classic look.

Cotton sheets tend to be favored over other fabrics when it comes to comfortable bedding. As a general rule, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheets. Anything over a 400 thread count should be okay. Anything over 400 isn’t really that much more noticeable and may not be worth the extra cost.

Perk Up Your Bedroom with Sunny Yellow

Yellow and white looks so crisp and clean in the bedroom. Who can wake up in a bad mood when you have such pretty bedding to greet you upon awakening? Don’t be afraid to mix patterns when you decorate your bed and bedroom with the same color scheme.

Egyptian cotton is commonly thought of as the best type of cotton for bedding – but be forewarned. Not all Egyptian cotton is created equal. Purchase Egyptian cotton sheets from a reputable manufacturer. Pima (also known as Supima) cotton is the next best thing. And if you prefer crisp sheets, opt for percale bedding.

Soothe Your Soul with Neutrals

I find neutral bedrooms to be calming and soothing. But what’s so great is it’s easy to add a pop of color simply by changing out the pillows, sheets, and blankets. A monochromatic color scheme can be quite calming and restful though.

A neutral bedroom is a great place to add a fun pattern, like a toile bedspread or similar. This particular quilt is double-sided so either side can be shown. It’s like having two bedspreads for the price of one.

Luxurious White Linens

When I was a kid I didn’t understand why a sale on linens was called a “white sale.” Our sheets were never white – we always had colored or patterned bedding in my home. The first white sale was hosted in 1878 by John Wanamaker. He offered a discount on linens in the month of January to entice shoppers into his store after the holidays. January is now the official month of the white sale!

Choosing Linens for Twin Beds

Just because a bedroom has more than one twin bed doesn’t mean the bedding on both beds has to be the same. Mix it up by choosing linens in different patterns, but in the same color. In this room the box springs are covered by a fitted sheet.

Of course, twin beds can be quite beautiful if the bedding does match.

Choosing bedding can be fun and you can almost always find a sale. Change bedding for the seasons or the holidays to add a quick room refresh.

  1. If I could afford it, I think I would completely change the look of my bed every time I stripped it for washing. I love bed linens and cannot point to an absolute favorite style. I try to stay neutral so that I can add something new once in a while but all of these beautiful linens you have shown are making me antsy for a decor change – and the comfortable beds are making me want to take a nap. 🙂 Thanks for a calm and relaxing post.

  2. I like that you said that a neutral bedroom is perfect for fun patterns. I have never thought about what kind of bedding I would want. I need to figure out how to be better at choosing this.

  3. I always love posts about linens… any kind of linens! Changing out linens anywhere is the easiest and most inexpensive way to change the look of a room or space! Linens are my “soft spot.” 😝

  4. Nice photos. I love the colors and prints, yet am always a sucker for creams and ivories. Those twin beds in ivory at the end are stunning.

  5. Great advice. What nice beds and bedding. Growing up my mother always bought percale sheets so I’m partial to them but good quality percale are pretty pricey. I’ve always wanted new bedding for each season lol but never got them. I could easily be a bedding collector lol. Love how you added bedding for the furry ones. Happy Fall.
