A Little Bit o’ Honey for Sale

At a recent farm market event, my daughter yearned for a Honey 4 Sale sign on display. She was tempted to buy it, but I talked her out of it by promising to make one for her. I started with a plain old wooden cutting board that I bought at Goodwill for one dollar.

The first layer is a special mix of Paris Gray and Louis Blue chalk paint from Annie Sloan.
A light white wash came next, rubbing half of it off.
I found a bee’s nest along with some bee graphics at Graphics Fairy.
The text was created using the Brittanic Bold font in Word.
Using a Mod Podge transfer method, I applied the graphics to the piece of painted wood.
Finally, I distressed it with sand paper and added a final coat of clear wax to protect it.
Next came a strip cut from a coffee bean sack to hang the sign.
Two holes were drilled at the top and I tied small bows after feeding it through.
Hubby was nice enough to drill the holes for me since I have an allergy to power tools.
Although I like the sign here on my porch with my chippy white chair and farm pillow,
I reminded myself it was for my daughter who just moved into her first house (a rental) as a married woman.
The farm pillow is by Stacey at A Sort of Fairytale Girl. Love her creations!
I may have to make another sign for my little porch.
I took the sign over to my daughter’s new place today as a house warming gift.
So instead of spending 30-some dollars, she has her honey sign for just a dollar!

  2. This is adorable, I’m always hesitate to do transfer methods, don’t know why? I’ll try out the hodgepodge method. Thanks for sharing the font, it’s so frustrating when some goes “I just picked a font”! I also love it next to the pillow on the chair, so charming looking! Hope you share at Sunday’s Best going on now!

  6. Pretty talented Mom, sounds like your daughter loved her sign as much as I do.
As soon as I saw your sign I have to admit I was already thinking about making one.
I printed out all the bee graphics on Graphics Fairy awhile back similar to that one in style, framed them all with thrift store frames after painting them, have them on living room walls, have a nice sized wicker bee skep I got on sale at HL on a table. Seems to be perfect for summer decorating. little something different, love how they look in aqua and white frames.
Better tell me now if you don’t want me being a copy cat. Don’t worry I’m not nearly as talented as you are so my sign will look much different. Glad you shared this sign tho. To me it’s so great and fun to save money and make things I see other places. Happy summer
