Discover a Surprising Apartment in an Amazing Car Barn

I think today’s home tour just might be the perfect blend for both the husband and wife. If you watch those house hunting shows on T.V., you’ve probably noticed the man typically defers to the wife’s desires when it comes to choosing a new home. Not always, but a majority of the time. Today’s charming car barn by Patrick Ahearn Architect has something for both parties!

An open concept floor plan contains plenty of charm and style with accents of red and blue. I’m a huge fan of bead board, shiplap, board and batten – really any type of architectural treatment or trim in a home. I think a great way of adding “warmth” to white spaces is to add custom elements like this living room. The rustic beams and wall of windows are an added bonus.

Cozy quilts, gingham checks, and a striped nubby rug add texture and visual appeal. Planked walls, ceilings, and beams lend architectural interest while a stone fireplace adds cozy warmth.

The living room opens into the kitchen, with an airy loft overhead. The kitchen is well equipped and makes efficient use of space for this living space above the barn’s garage. I could easily live here. Could you?

The floor plan is perfect for family get-togethers or entertaining friends. You’d never know this living space is on the second floor of a car barn. Careful consideration is given to every detail. That’s often what makes or breaks the appeal of a room.

Gorgeous wide-plank wood floors add a rich element beneath the vaulted rooms. The dining room is tucked behind the living area that leads into the kitchen. Grain sack slipcovers add color and texture, along with the appearance of quilt fabrics in red and white.

How adorable is this arched doorway to a cozy sleeping room?  So unique and certainly not something you’d expect to see in a barn apartment. The red and white color scheme throughout creates a cheery atmosphere.

It’s no surprise that red and white accentuates the master bedroom with its beautiful four-poster bed. I love all the trim work in this not-so-humble apartment. The use of textiles is a comforting touch.

Now comes the man cave part of the car barn! Leather recliners pair up in front of the bar to watch T.V. on the first floor of the barn. The brick floor and beamed ceiling put the crowning touch on this space that needs to be worthy of housing vintage vehicles. I know people with collector’s cars and their garages are immaculate, so I’m not surprised to see this.

So what do you think? Does this car barn house the ultimate man cave and the perfect spaces for the lady of the house? Of course, if this were my place, I’d be sure to drive each and every one of those vintage cars! Hubby would just have to deal with it.

A custom stone driveway leads to the barn doors. I’ve always liked a driveway that has a strip of grass in the middle. My hunch is that the car barn is used as a guest house on a larger piece of property with an expansive home, but I’d be happy to live here year-round.

  1. This is a fabulous place all around! Yeah, the ’57 Thunderbird would be a fun car to drive. I pinned this to a newly created Pinterest board called Home Tours.

  2. I’m with you. I think this is not only space for the cars, but guest quarters to a much larger home. Yikes – definitely how the “other half” lives.

  3. Am in love with that house, except to have to clean. Give me our little single wide at this point in life, have better things to do with my energy/.time than cleaning a big house,lol..So I’m lazy at 77.
Saw so much I really loved. Very very nice.
Love how your house looks, like real cozy farm house. Happy daze

  4. This Car Barn house is a total reflection of a husband wife’s team work. Quite a good choice of furniture and the color combinations all are visible in the pictures. Good team work I must say. The flooring and roofing are two key elements, I love the most. Totally in love with the house and especially the Car Bar is surely a new place to for guest visits.

  5. So glad that you reposted this! I missed it the first time. The car barn is an amazing space. I adore brick floors… ahem… your kitchen floor, for example! BTW, I’ll take the red one. It reminds me of the little red 240Z that I worked hard to buy new back in ’73. Smile.

  6. What a lovely place. I could definitely live there full time. Too bad as I’m sure it’s just for guests and family visits. Almost seems a waste. Trim work is indeed nice as is the fabulous decorating of this cozy, calm place.
