A Rocking Chair for Every Porch

You know, I realized my circa 1875 house does not have rocking chair on the front porch. Yes, there is a porch swing out there but I feel somehow it’s missing something.

When you think of an Americana style porch, don’t you immediately envision rocking chairs? Like this pretty red one on a Southern porch that looks out across the water in the distance.

This cabin porch with a pair of green rockers reminds me of the Airbnb rental in Michigan that my family stayed at last fall.

A pair of white painted wooden rocking chairs cozy up to a flower bed – reminds me of a scene from the Andy Griffith Show.

A classic white house with black shutters is adorned with the American flag and chairs where you can rock away the summer days.

There’s no reason why you can’t drag some of your indoor furniture outside to the porch. Here, a wooden rocker pairs with a chest on a large porch.

I like this porch where you can choose between a suspended swing or a simple rocking chair with a colorful quilt for warmth, if needed.

Bring your houseplants outside in order to enjoy them while you spend a relaxing morning in wood rockers. I’ve got four of my tropical style plants out on my deck and they look so healthy – I can tell they love it outside.

My porch has a pair of white wooden folding chairs and I think I might just replace them with two rocking chairs. I’m curious – what’s on your front porch?

  1. We have had some rocking chairs on our front porch for about 3 yrs and love them. With these hot summer days and nights we use them alot. At first I fought the idea thinking they were just for old people. LOL. My husband and I are well over retirement age,are still very active but love sitting and rocking with a cup of. coffee in the morning or a cold drink in the evening. Usually our 2 dogs and 2 cats join us.During this staying at home due to Covid19 we use them even more. Actually I was just shopping on line for a couple of new ones.

  2. I am fascinated by those rockers in the last picture. I guess you put your feet up on those crossbars. Really unique. We have a long narrow porch (21×6’) with wide steps leading up to the front door in the center. I couldn’t get both rockers on one side so they’re on opposite ends of the porch. Still fine for conversations. I sit out there ALL the time. Love them. My dream would be a porch swing though. But no complaints – there’s something magical about sitting and rocking or swinging on your front porch and saying hi to the neighbors as they walk by.

  3. I have a glider and old metal chairs on my screened in porch but have been looking for a rocking chair for my back porch. I love the ideas you posted for us and the last ones i really liked.

  4. Even though I live in a condo I still have 2 decks and a rocking chair for each. I love my rockers but definitely need to repaint them. I like the colors displayed here but I think the red one was just perfect.

  5. I’d love to know how to achieve the lattice detail on the first picture. We are hoping to build a farmer’s porch onto the front of our house next year and you can bet there will be 2 rockers on it!

  6. Yep 👍 two white rockers on my porch 😊 I like those in that last picture also but I can just see myself tripping when I went to get up.

  7. There really is something amazing and peaceful about sitting on the porch in a rocker… a cup of coffee in hand in the mornings…… My goal is to have a front porch big enough for rockers … and maybe a swing too !! 🙂 … for now…. we always look for rockers on the deck / porch when we plan a vaca getaway….. But mostly…. Its a precious reminder of sitting on the front porch of my Grandmothers small farmhouse…. where there were rockers, and a swing… waving as the neighbors drove by in the evenings…. 🙂
This is such a great post !!! Thank you

  8. We bought 2 white wooden rockers for our screened in porch when we downsized to our home now. However, we found the wooden rockers not quite as comfortable as we had hoped and envisioned. I sold them and we bought a couple of wrought iron “spring based” chairs. We call them the “bouncy chairs.” They are actually vintage chairs and aesthetically and functionally really get the job done! Many wonderful hours are spent on the porch and in those chairs enjoying our amazing North Central Florida climate and freedom of life. 🙂
