Charming Old Homes in Huntley, Illinois

Fall color is in peak season here in Illinois! A recent trip through Huntley, Illinois to my grandson’s football game resulted in an impromptu photo shoot of charming old homes lining the streets.

Huntley is a fast-growing town of about 25,000 people at the far northwestern edge of the Chicago suburbs. Like my town, it wasn’t considered a suburb until urban sprawl forced its growth. There are plenty of new houses in new subdivisions, but there are charming old homes to capture your heart.

White Clapboard Farmhouse with Red Shutters

Many of the older homes have been resided with vinyl or aluminum, which I find unfortunate because I love the quaint appeal of original clapboard siding. Nevertheless, the updated houses still have an air of charm about them.

Some houses were decorated for fall, and others were decorated for Halloween.

Huntley enjoys a mix of both large and small older homes. This little brown bungalow had a fun Halloween porch.

Small Bungalow Cottage

I have a feeling this beautiful bungalow was a Sears catalog home. The second story balcony would be one of my favorite places if I lived here. Did you notice the little oval window at the peak?

In addition to houses with siding, you’ll see brick homes along the tree-lined streets too. Most of these charming old homes in Huntley are pretty typical of what you’ll see throughout the Chicagoland area.

We also have our fair share of tri-levels and split levels that were built in the 50s and 60s. The house I grew up in was a tri-level built in 1960 and is somewhat reminiscent of the Brady Bunch house. While I loved that house, my heart belongs to historic homes.

Two Story Victorian House with Double Porch

I mean seriously – how could anyone resist the unique beauty of this Victorian home with its double-decker porch and fish scale trim at the peak of the roof?

On a side note, I’m headed to Michigan with my two daughters and their families. We’re visiting a large corn maze at my sister’s farm so it should be fun – I just hope the weather cooperates!

  3. If Huntley, Illinois doesn’t shout “Americana”, I don’t know what town would! Such lovely homes and so well maintained. You can see the love and pride they have for their homes. Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the pictures and blog with my coffee this morning, doesn’t get any better!

    1. As you may, or may not, remember, I grew up in a neighborhood much like the ones you have shown. My childhood home recently went up for sale, and for a few minutes I thought about buying it. But then reality crept in. I like a one floor home these days, and we are more rural with an acre. But when you do these tours, it sure invokes some wonderful memories. I was wondering, what makes you think that one home was a Sears Kit? And, for the record, my dad spent many summers painting our old huge house, one side at a time. It hasn’t been sided yet!
