Cheater’s Guide to Christmas Gift Wrapping

Last night it snowed here in Illinois and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Just two more weeks until the big day and I have a confession to make. I’m not a fan of wrapping presents. My hunch says many of you feel the same way so I’m here with the cheater’s guide to Christmas gift wrapping!

Today I’m joining some of my favorite bloggers to bring you a wealth of ideas to make your Christmas presents pretty. Their links are at the end of this post. A special thank you to Krista at The Happy Housie for coordinating today’s event.

Cheater's Guide to Christmas Gift Wrapping

My secret for making holiday wrapping easy? Printed gift boxes that are sturdy and durable. The patterns are pretty so there’s no need to wrap them. In fact, sometimes the Christmas boxes don’t even need a ribbon. I find most of my boxes at Home Goods.

For simpler patterned boxes, add an attractive ribbon and a small adornment like a spray of pine cones from Joann Fabrics.

Use coordinating gift tags and other adornments like jingle bells or sprigs of holly.

Use wired ribbon when creating bows for your Christmas gifts. You can manipulate it much easier than regular ribbon.

Unfortunately for me, not all of the gifts I bought fit into the decorative boxes which means I have to do a little bit of wrapping. I chose paper in the same tones as the boxes and tree. I like everything to coordinate.

The whole Christmas gift wrapping/coordinating thing started years ago with my mother. We’d pick paper and ribbon out together and admire each other’s trees and packages. I treasure my memories of mom. She was a devout Christian and I know she’s rejoicing with the angels now.

I think mom would approve of my Christmas box choices this year.

Wrapping presents can be pretty time consuming, so I like my cheater’s guide to Christmas gift wrapping. Not to mention, the recipients love the decorative boxes, too. Since they’re sturdy, they make great containers for storing Christmas ornaments.

What type of gift wrapping do you like most? Do you choose silver and gold, or are you a traditionalist who enjoys red and green under their tree?

  1. I don’t mind wrapping gifts and I especially love plaid wrapping paper. I normally have some gifts wrapped in plaid and some in a coordinating solid color or a coordinating stripe or floral. I try to stay with a coordinating color scheme, but have been known to throw in an odd package or two wrapped in leftover from last year paper. It’s all good and I don’t claim to have “blogworthy” wrapped gifts and the recipients have never complained. Your tree is beautiful – such an inspiration to us all.

  2. I’m a big fan of gift bags with tissue paper and have a bunch of each stashed from after Christmas sales. I’m jealous of your snow! It looks like we will break a record here in Denver for the most days without snow this time of year.

  3. The printed boxes are gorgeous and look even more stunning with your creative embellishments! I love how soft and pretty your whole tree scheme is this year, Jennifer!

  4. Using the printed boxes is brilliant! So time effective and you definitely don’t need to worry about perfect corners or running out of tape. I’m certain your mom would approve, too! And, as far as the snow goes, we’re bone dry here and it’s so warm (even though I’m in Canada), but I do hope it snows at least a bit before Christmas. It’s feeling kind of strange right now!

  5. Such great ideas and WOW! you have the most beautiful printed boxes ever! I LOVE to wrap packages! In fact, my first PAID job was with Sears, who, back in the day, hired gals at the tender age of 15 (!!!) to be Christmas Gift Wrappers! I was so excited when they hired me the next year, at 16, to become Part Time help at Christmas and thereafter. Our Sears store set up the most amazing Christmas Wrap Area and supplied us with tons of paper, tissue, ribbons and embellishments. We had a ball being creative and providing our customers with excellently wrapped gifts. My dear parents had taught us to wrap gifts well and I have always considered the wrapping as an extension of the joy of gift giving. One of my sadnesses at Christmas is the hard time I have finding Christmas Wrap that reflects the true “Reason for the Season.” I always want my wrap to reflect the intent of my heart in the giving of the gift. There’s just doesn’t seem to be much room for Jesus in the “holiday” season anymore. 🙁

  6. Everything is so pretty – I love the coordinated look too! {but sadly, can’t get the rest of my family to follow!!} I love theose tags with the houses on them and the little gingerbread house box tucked in the corner. Merry Christmas!
