Christmas Votive Holders on the Cheap

This Christmas season I’ve got a few decorating projects lined up (like who doesn’t, right?). Hopefully I’ll get to all of them but I’m not makin’ any promises. I’ll just do the best I can. First up are these little Christmas votive holders.

Simple and sweet. At this time of year, I like anything that’s simple.
Here’s what I started with. Six little candle holders at 49 cents each from Goodwill.
I suppose they look cute enough as is, but they don’t really go with my decor.
I used a base coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint – a mix of Paris Grey and Louis Blue.
Once that dried, I added a white wash in Old White, and wiped off just a little of it.
Just a hint of the grey-blue shows through. I painted the insides, as well.
Tucked inside are votives that came with glass holders. This way, wax doesn’t melt all over inside.
I grouped them atop my dining buffet and added some glass ornaments for more sparkle.
The white feather tree was a recent find, along with the star ornaments.
For just $3 I got some new Christmas votive holders that match my decor.

  1. They look great! I never would have thought of painting them since they are metal. I love that you did! You have some very pretty Christmas decorations. The snowflakes are gorgeous.

  2. Don’t you love it when you find something really inexpensive and then transform it with a little paint and imagination? Your buffet is stunning! I cant wait to see what you do with the family room 🙂

  3. yes yes yes! ooooooh this is a fabulous idea. thank you. my mind is racing with what i can paint because it really transforms the piece to resemble chalkware or stoneware, right?

    bravo.

  4. good job redoing the votive holders to go with your decor better. Not everybody wants silver all the time, they’ll be much more versatile for you now.
You are so lucky to find those votive holders so inexpensively. The Goodwill in Grand Junction, CO area is so expensive and has so much junk nobody wants it. Guess we’re all supposed to pay for the new building they built about 5 yrs ago now. Never find cute stuff like you did and that I read about other bloggers finding all the time at their Goodwill stores and their local thrift stores. Happy week

  7. They go well with your sparkly neutrals. Goodwill is my go to store too. I scored a huge white deer head that hangs now on my stone fireplace there recently. Happy Christmas, Olive

  8. These votives are so cute! I like easy at this time of year, too. So nice to hear from you today. I grow hostas too, but may try impatients next year. I have lots of sun, but Pacific Northwest sun, so it’s not as warm here as other parts of the country. Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

  9. Love, love, love Goodwill & love how you re-did these votive holders. I also love how you use ornaments “freely” as fillers in your decor. Beautiful!
