Cozy Living in a French Country Cottage: Summer Dreams

Welcome to Cozy Living Saturday, which occurs the first Saturday of every month. It’s when I gather with a few blogging friends to share cozy ideas for the month. It’s whatever gives us warm fuzzies for the month and can be anything from home decor to a yummy recipe to outdoor living ideas. Summer also means travel for me, so I’m sharing a beautiful French country cottage that’s sure to make you want to relax in the living room or bedroom, or cook up a tasty French meal in the kitchen. You can see what my friends are sharing at the end of this post.

Cozy Living - French Country Cottage

Let’s start with the light and airy living room that gives off an organic vibe through natural fabrics, stone crocks, wood furniture, and decorations from Mother Nature herself. A sense of peace is emphasized with a portion of the famed serenity prayer painted on the staircase wall.

The living room opens up to the kitchen, which definitely has a French country style.

While some people might like a more modern kitchen, I prefer this type of kitchen which is also known as an “unfitted kitchen.” An unfitted kitchen doesn’t have all matching cabinets and generally uses standalone pieces. I consider my own kitchen to be unfitted even though it does have a few built-in cabinets. I love the pairing of gray and mustard in this French country kitchen.

Remember the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun? Frances, the main character, renovates an Italian villa. I’ve always thought how wonderful it would be to live in another country in a home that’s hundreds of years old. That’s what this French country cottage reminds me of. It transports me to another world, a dreamy fantasy of sorts.

On the opposite side of the spacious living room is the dining area.

Large windows throughout the cottage bring in plenty of natural light while floor to ceiling curtains add softness to the beautiful interiors.

I’m intrigued with the large vases on the side table. I wonder what they’re made out of? There’s so much organic texture to enjoy, including the rustic ceiling beams the the plastered walls.

More pottery lines the shelves of the cabinet on the far wall. Views of the outdoors can be seen from every angle of the living room.

Upstairs, painted paneling coats the vaulted ceiling while a boho chic chandelier takes center stage in the middle of the bedroom. Read a book in bed or in the comfy lounge chair in the corner.

The French country cottage has oodles of charming details like wooden plantation shutters, painted bead board wainscoting, and a cute side chair with a linen cushion.

  1. A simple, cool vibe throughout this home. Cool as in a great place on a hot summer day to leave the doors and windows open and listen to nature. I’d like to make some of those wire hearts! What an idea that probably doesn’t cost a lot but gives some really good texture without over doing the decor for the wall.

  2. I’m with you. I love the kitchen in this home. The unmatched cupboard pieces makes it look lived in and acquired over time. Such a beautiful space. Makes me want to give my kitchen a new look. Thanks for hosting Jennifer!

  3. I just loved that movie and that Villa that she bought. I can totally see myself doing that in a small countryside town. This pretty home draws me in because it’s relaxed and lived in.

  4. I didn’t know there was a term for “unfitted kitchen.” I also have that style, somewhat, and absolutely love it. It looks lived in, comfortable and like it’s been there a long time. Priceless. I also adored that movie and what in the world could be more fun than taking an old European home and bringing it back to life like that. I was blessed to have a huge bathroom once, with a lounge chair and it was so luxurious. Bathing and then curling up in a comfy chair right there to read a book or doze. What a fun home this was to tour with you, Jennifer. Thanks.
