Decorating with Flowers: 12 Easy Ideas

When spring rolls into summer, I find less time for decorating inside. Warm weather beckons me outside to enjoy the flower beds and vegetable gardens. Lazy afternoons and long walks are more enjoyable than spending time indoors. For quick decorating, I turn to simple flower arrangements to add color and softness. Today I’ve rounded up some of my favorite tips for decorating with flowers.

Garden Flowers

By far, the most economical way of decorating with flowers is to use colorful flowers from your garden. Turn a section of your vegetable garden into a flower garden filled with cutting flowers like zinnias, marigolds, snapdragons, and more.

I especially love to add zinnias to a cutting garden. They last all summer long and on into fall. Zinnias come in a variety of heights. I like to tuck the longer stemmed beauties into my vintage bottles, as seen here on a summer mantel. Zinnias are long lasting, too.

Coneflowers and sunny rudbeckia make great cut flowers, too. I love the combo of pink and yellow for a simple floral centerpiece. Both these flowers have strong stems and are great options for decorating with flowers.

What’s great about using flowers from the garden is they lend themselves beautifully to seasonal decor. My Virginia bluebells and grape hyacinths bring cool blue to my coffee table during the spring season.

Silk Flowers

The obvious advantage to silk flowers is that you can use them over and over. They always stay fresh looking. I added a group of white and cream silk flowers to a floral chandelier that’s easy to make.

I then used the floral chandelier in my spring home tour with Country Living magazine last year. I plan to bring it out for my upcoming summer home tour next month – but with different flowers.

I simply adore ranunculus, but they tend to be expensive. The silk versions look just as pretty and are easy to arrange. One stem in a simple vase or bottle is all you need to do – then group them together for visual impact. I used them in my spring entryway this year and plan to move them to a new location for summer. I’m not ready to pack them up.

Farmhouse Flowers

Farmhouse bouquets are simple and unassuming. Grab a quick bunch and place them in a simple vase like a mason jar. Marigolds from the garden add a quick pop of color in my family room.

Of course, you don’t have to cut flowers from your garden. Pick a bunch of wildflowers from the side of the road for a fresh and easy take on decorating with flowers.

Colorful, store-bought flowers look good in mason jars, too. Farmhouse flowers should be casual and fuss-free.

Flowers on Cakes

When decorating with flowers, don’t limit your arrangements to vases, bottles, and jars. Fresh flowers are a super easy (and pretty) way to decorate a cake. I used pale green and creamy white flowers to decorate a naked cake.

  1. As a faithful follower of your blog, I have taken your advice and planted lots of zinnias in my flower beds this last week. Hope mine are as pretty as yours. Happy Mother’s Day, Jennifer!

  2. So many sweet floral arrangements. I have some too and I am motivated to do something with them after reading this blog. Now all I need are some flowers! It is still in the 40’s here in Maine so it might be a while before I can play with them. But thanks for the ideas. Happy Mother’s Day!
