DIY Drop Cloth Curtains

Rarely do I purchase pre-made curtains for my home. It’s been this way ever since I’ve been messin’ around with hearth and home. And so recently I went on the hunt for curtain fabric. I seriously considered burlap, but then I saw another blog where drop cloth had been used and changed my mind.

After a quick trip to the paint store for drop cloth, I set up my mother’s old Kenmore sewing machine.
I planned to make tab curtains but then I remembered I had tons of twine that could be used for the tabs.
I cut the twine in even length strips.
After sewing the edges of the drop cloth curtains, I attached the twine in sets of three.
Double them over in the middle and sew the twine to the curtain top, sewing back and forth several times.
Flip the curtain right side up to check the stitching for neatness.
Tie the twine into a bow on the curtain rod and let the ends trail down.
Three sets of curtains for about $30. Even IKEA can’t beat that price.
Outside the window it’s snowing. A lot!
Looking at these photos, I think I’m going to add some stenciling to the curtains.
What do you think? Stencil, or leave as is?
Maybe a few candles are in order on this snowy winter day.
Taffy enjoys looking out the window to watch the snow fall.
I think we’ll stay in tonight and enjoy the cozy candlelight.

Don’t forget to join me and my daughter at Flour N Friends for
Veggie Valentines during the month of February!

  1. They turned out great Jennifer. Stenciling would be really pretty – something towards the bottom in a cool design maybe. I like them they way they are too. Stenciling onto that type of material should be pretty easy. Thanks for sharing!

  2. How did we ever survive any craft project without our beloved dropcloths??? lol! I’ve used them as curtains and upholstery, too – and just love the way they come out! Your drapes look fabulous with the twine tabs! 🙂

  3. Oh, you did a beautiful job! I have thought of making some curtains like this but haven’t gotten up the nerve! 😉
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 😉

  4. I love those curtains and especially the twine tabs. I like those better than the regular tab tops and it looks easier too. I’m like you…I have rarely ever purchased curtains. I use lots of tension rods and those clips to hang dresser scarves, feed sacks, tea towels and anything else I can get my hands on! LOL! I have several bigger windows though that could use an update and that looks like just the ticket! Thank you so much…now I just need a blog that shows me how to slipcover using those drop clothes! Gorgeous! And as for the stenciling…I love them as is but if you think they need it then go for it…you’re very talented!

  5. Love your curtains, they’re gorgeous. Loads of blogs have mentioned ‘drop cloths’ before, but I was never sure what they were. Thanks for mentioning going to a paint store – I think that’s what we would call dust sheets in the UK, though I don’t think they come in such a nice fabric as yours !

  6. I love the curtains! I will be stealing this idea for my country home. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  9. I really like them, I especially like how how you attached them with the twine. I have a booth in an antique mall I’m opening up, and planned on using drop cloths, but now I will attached using you twine hangers. love the look. thank so much for sharing how you did them. Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration at Sunday’s Best party.

  10. How about adding some kind of trim that would co-ordindate with some stenciling, keep it simple. This is an older post I’m responding to imagine you’ve done whatever you were going to do to your drop cloth curtains. Hope I can find a post that shows them, would love to see what you did.
