When you live in an old house, storage is a highly-prized commodity. In the good old days, homes were taxed on their number of rooms. Closets were counted as a room so many older houses have as few closets as possible to help keep real estate taxes down. We have one closet in our house on the second floor. It’s a really long closet stretching from one bedroom to the next. Although it’s like a bowling alley for clothes, it doesn’t solve our kitchen storage problem. (This post contains affiliate links.)
The newest piece here is my kitchen hutch and it really helps with additional storage since my kitchen doesn’t have a lot of “standard” cabinets.
Increased kitchen storage is such a blessing! I’ve kind of been on an organization kick lately and a surprising benefit of this initiative is lower stress! Getting rid of messy piles and having ample storage is giving a lift to my spirits!
Before getting this new little hutch, this corner of the kitchen featured an open shelf and an old bead board cabinet, which you see in this Christmas photo. The ironstone is pretty on display, but it did require extra cleaning (added stress). The old cabinet, which I love, isn’t ideal for kitchen storage because of the single small door.
My bead board cabinet is now in the sitting room. I can store items in this cabinet that I don’t use very often.
Back to the new kitchen hutch! I’ve tucked several pieces of my white ironstone behind the glass doors where it can still be seen and enjoyed.
These cute mugs look like enamelware, but they’re actually ceramic and I love them! They’re in a handy place here on the new kitchen hutch.
My favorite Mason Cash bowls are on display, too. I’d like to get a few more of these simply because I think they’re so pretty. They come in a variety of patterns and colors. I use them to hold fruits and vegetables.
The drawers and lower cabinets hold bake ware and blenders. We can see and hear the pond and waterfall through that window to the left of the hutch. It’s wonderful in the summer when the windows are open.
I’m probably going to swap out the hardware on either the new kitchen hutch or the kitchen island to create a more unified look.
If you live in an older home, I’m sure you can relate to my struggle with storage. Free standing pieces are a great solution for the lack of closet space.

The hutch is amazing. Not only pretty, but with some very usable storage that when organized, always gives one a sense of accomplishment. Or maybe that’s just me – I feel very proud of myself when I organize and make something better.

Where did you put your microwave?
Hi! My plan was to put the microwave on our sideboard (next to the built-in cabinet) but I decided I wouldn’t like it there. So I ended up putting it on the new kitchen hutch where I had the Mason Cash bowls. There’s a cut-out in the back of the cabinet for a microwave or coffee maker cord. The hutch is the perfect depth for the microwave. I haven’t taken a picture of it yet. 🙂
This is GREAT! I have an early 1900’s Hoosier style baker’s cabinet in My Wee Abode… it’s WONDERFUL for the extra storage, and pull-out counter space! Love this post!

Your kitchen cabinet is lovely . Always more storage the better especially in the kitchen. If it were me I would change the hardware on the island it would be less expensive I would think. The sound of french doors would be awesome and a courtyard to go to that sounds like heaven.
Storage is definitely a problem in our small townhouse, and a white cabinet like yours would be perfect for my lichen.
Crazy me, but I just now noticed that you have beadboard wainscoting in your kitchen. Do you have it all the way around your kitchen on just as an accent wall(s)? We decided to use beadboard as our backsplash instead of tile because tile tends to date a kitchen and I am so past trends. We have downsized to this home and we don’t want to be “updating” it every few years. But we are now thinking about using beadboard throughout our small sized kitchen and nook area. I’m wondering what has worked for you in your kitchen. It’s so stinking cute.
