Farmhouse Style Storage Ideas

If you live in an old farmhouse like I do … you know your number one challenge is storage!  We have one closet in our house. That’s it. Just one. So I have to get creative when it comes to storage ideas. Here’s how I manage to organize things with farmhouse style storage. (This post contains affiliate links.)

Let’s start in the kitchen. This built-in bead board cabinet is my favorite storage unit in my house! I remember when we first toured this house before buying it, I saw this cabinet and pretty much knew I’d be making an offer. Dishes, tupperware, canned goods, and much more are stored in here.

Next to the built-in cabinet is this free standing sideboard, which I bought from a friend at work. I store cookbooks in here, along with baking tools like measuring cups and such. It’s funny … whenever I tell someone in my family to go get such-and-such in the sideboard they’re like, “what’s a sideboard?” Would they know what I meant if I called it a credenza? Doubtful.

On the other side of the kitchen, I’ve chosen open shelving to provide additional storage. Because when you have beautiful white ironstone, you don’t want to keep it behind closed doors. It needs to be properly displayed out in the open. I do use all of these pieces and I like that I don’t have to dig to find them.

I recently added this wire basket wall hanger in my kitchen. You’d be amazed where you can create additional storage when you have to be creative. This basket wall hanger fit just perfectly next to my refrigerator. I put my most-used spices in it so I can grab them quickly.

I have a couple of storage opportunities in my new sitting room. The first is this wonderful cabinet that I found at HomeGoods. It holds plenty of dishes and the drawers are great for anything, really. I still love the bird posters that hang above it.

On the other side of the room is a smaller cabinet under my cow painting that holds vases, candle holders, and other items.

My dry sink is a classic farmhouse style storage piece. Here it’s shown in my dining room, but I recently moved it into the kitchen.

One of my favorite storage pieces is my shabby chic style buffet. I’m surprised how many things I can fit in here!

When you live in an old farmhouse, you really have to get creative with your storage ideas. What are some of your favorite storage pieces?

    Hugs,

  4. I’d love to see another picture of your bathroom, namely that cabinet that you removed the doors. I have already taken down the closet doors in my bathroom and this looks like another idea I might could borrow! 🙂
    Your home is so beautiful.

  5. I ove seeing your house-gorgoues. I too live in a 100+ year old farmhouse/cottage and storage is a big problem. Part of the reason we are doing an addition/remodel is to add closets! The good thing about having little closet space is that you have to be choosy about what goes in your home and so less goes in ( at least in theory!-ha ha )

  6. You have come up with functional and beautiful storage solutions, Jennifer! I agree that you just have to be a little creative when you don’t have a lot of traditional closets.

  7. You really have so many great solutions for storage and everything is done so attractively and in keeping with the farmhouse style of your home. I love all of your pieces. Thank you for your ideas, Jen!

  8. So pretty Jennifer! I know just how you feel, our farmhouse didn’t have one single closet until we added some, it really does force you to think outside of the box, which is what I live for! I agree with the other ladies, that beadboard cabinet is amazing. Thanks for all of the inspiration! ~Meg

  9. It is amazing you only have one closet. You have really made great use of the cabinets. My favorite is the built in one in the kitchen. And the wire rack is so handy.

  10. You are one clever gal! I noticed the kitchen scale in the kitchen. Love it. It brought back memories of the baby scale that my Mom had for us. How I wish that I had that precious scale! When my father in love closed his medical practice we wisely got his HEAVY iron weight scale (more for practical use- our kids were young and still growing- not decorating use, duh) but passed over his precious baby scale! Can’t cry over spilt milk but boy, wouldn’t we all like some “do- overs?” !!!

Still loving your green tiled kitchen floor. It’s the best!

  11. The beadboard cabinet in the kitchen is probably my favorite. The storage pieces you chose look like they belong in the house, not an afterthought. All your furniture “plays nice” together. I love how you move furniture to different rooms. In the farmhouse I grew up in, there was no cabinetry in the kitchen so my mom had a Hoosier cabinet she used. I remember using the flour sifter and thought that was the best thing in the world. Would love to have that cabinet now. There was also a huge sink with a built-in drainboard. You are an amazing lady to come with all these ideas. Have you shown how you handled bedroom clothing storage? (Or did I miss it?)

  12. I am with all of your followers. I love your home. When we built our home in 91 I put in many closets. I now have all of them stuffed and am hiding things under beds, under table skirts ,etc. I am an organized hoarder. Just brought some dishes from the 70s out of the attic and had a hard time finding a place for them. I have added several pieces since then to hold my pretties and of course they are full too. Now I joke that the ladies are going to love our auction someday. My husband just shakes his head and says, “Maybe you should get rid of some of it”. Naw! just keep cramming it in.

  13. Love your home and storage ideas. Makes people feel at home. It’s so comfortable. Where do you get your pictures.
