Friday Finds #54: Getting Outdoors

This past week I took my granddaughter to New Buffalo, Michigan for a few days at the beach and the dunes. We took a walk through a forested park and I explained the art of “forest bathing” to her. Her 10-year old mind found it fascinating yet confusing. She couldn’t understand how being in the forest would make you feel better.

I try to instill a love for nature in my children and grandchildren. We miss out on God’s creation when our noses are stuck in a screen all day – whether it’s the television, video games, a computer, or phone. Disconnecting from electronics and exploring the world firsthand is so important. In fact, there’s a program called 1000 Hours Outside devoted to getting kids out in nature.

My goal is to do some overnight camping this summer. We need a few supplies first – like a tent and air mattress. If you have a tent you especially love, let me know what it is. We already have outdoor cooking gear. I even plan to set the tent up by the pond, too. I’d love to sleep with the sound of the waterfall all night. It’ll be like when I was a kid and dad would set up a pup tent in the backyard.

I didn’t have a whole lot of time to explore online this week since I was on a short vacation with Zoe, but I think you’ll enjoy these Friday Find treasures:

If for some reason you can’t get out to explore a bit of your world, the Centsational Girl shares a collection of virtual video tours from around the world. Who knows? You might be inspired to take a vacation at one of the locations!

How about exploring an abandoned, old mansion? Holly shares photos of a Virginia mansion that you might enjoy. She’s one of the first bloggers I started following!

I stumbled across a fresh take on open kitchen shelving that renews my love for shelves over upper cabinets. Yes, it requires a little more dusting but I love the look of these kitchens.

A new trend that’s gaining popularity is the use of mid-tone paint colors in the home. Light yet soft was the Rachel Ashwell shabby chic trend, followed by just the opposite – dark and moody paint colors. And now, mid-tone paint colors seem to be sweeping the interiors scene.

When you’re spending more time outdoors this summer and need a little refreshment, try my Strawberry Julius recipe. It’s similar to Orange Julius but uses strawberries instead.

  1. That abandoned mansion was quite something. The price tag was high but I’m going to assume because of the hefty acreage, I would think it would cost about another million or close to to bring it back to the glory it once was. If only I could win the lottery !

  2. I loved the virtual tours and the old mansion. Hopefully someone will buy it, what a waste. Nature is what makes me smile, I love to sit outside and enjoy the birds, bees, and butterflies, it’s such a stress reliever. I hope your having a great time!!
