Friday Finds #58: MidSummer Dreaming

Although MidSummer Day is officially celebrated on June 24th, I like to think of late July and early August as midsummer. Our summer weather will extend through September and often lasts through mid-October. Right now is about the time I start panicking that I haven’t done enough to enjoy the long, warm days so I do more planning to take advantage of sunshine and nature.

Last weekend we took a day trip to the Rock River in Oregon, Illinois (a blog post is coming soon) and this weekend we plan to go to Rock Cut State Park which is about an hour northwest of us. I’ve never been there and I’ve heard it’s beautiful. Illinois actually has numerous state parks that are beautifully maintained.

Do you visit local state and county parks in your area? I know I tend to think that parks closer to home aren’t as exciting, but that’s just not the case. You really don’t have to travel far to find interesting and unique places. So I’ve made it a goal to do more local exploration these remaining days of summer.

If you have a favorite locale, I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

Here’s this week’s Friday Finds for a little bit of online exploring you can do from the comfort of your favorite chair – indoors or out!

Dreaming of a last-minute summer vacation, or planning a visit somewhere special in the fall? Check out these unique rental properties and hotels located in the Napa and Sonoma region of California. There’s sure to be something that tickles your fancy!

I’ve always been a sucker for arbor trellises and continue to think about where to add one or two in my yard. Melissa at The Inspired Room rounded up a great selection of arbor ideas for the garden.

Let me know if you like this Mid-Century modern home with a bit of a funky vibe. I find its eclectic and quirky style rather endearing. When I see houses like this, I wish I was a little more daring in style.

Do you have a vegetable garden and if yes, do you sometimes wonder what to do with your harvest? Check out these summer vegetable recipes from Midwest Living! Even if you don’t have a garden, you’ve probably got a nearby farmer’s market where you can score fresh, seasonal veggies.

Feeling crafty? Try your hand at these pretty paper lanterns you can hang indoors or out.

Have you dreamt of a pool but don’t have the budget to cover the high cost? Here’s a unique DIY pool on a budget that might prove to be just the thing you need to cool off!

Tomorrow we’re off to Rock Cut State Park where there are miles of trails, two lakes, boats to rent, and a sandy beach for swimming. I hope you’ve got something fun and/or relaxing planned for your weekend!

  1. I had a good time on that tour and would love to have an arbor. Veggies look yummy, have a great time on your get-a-way.

  2. Love the mid century modern home. I grew up in the 50’s and always enjoy the new updates of that look.
LOL I also grew up in Illinois and remember the humidity, so, considering I am more of a cool weather fan, I would be filled with dread to go on summer excursions there…but will very much enjoy your photos.

    1. Hi Jillian,

I had to laugh when I saw your comment about Illinois summers. This past weekend it reached 90 degrees both Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday felt much warmer because the humidity was much higher! I still love summer though. 🙂

  3. I too had to chuckle about our Illinois summer humidity. Our AC took a dive this past weekend and the humid 90’s were not my idea of a vacation either, but I got an e-mail from Com Ed saying I saved more energy than the average customer, and will receive a little over $9.00 credit on my bill! Nice, but not something I will be voluntarily doing on a regular basis. LOL
