Frosted Mason Jar Votives: Easy DIY Holiday Decor

When I have time, I like to revisit some of my past projects on the blog – especially when it can save me time creating new ideas. Today I’m sharing frosted mason jar votives that I made a few years ago for my Christmas stairway. This easy DIY project was a hit on Pinterest so I thought I should resurrect it. To make your own frosted mason jar votives, start with small mason jars, or any other small glass. I had extra Ball jars that I didn’t use for canning and grabbed them out of my kitchen cupboard.

After wiping off the surface, I applied a thin layer of Mod Podge to the outside of the jar. I didn’t cover the entire jar; I coated them about three-fourths of the way up.

Once the sides of the jar are covered in glue, simply shake glitter onto the jars. It can get a little messy so be sure to work on top a piece of paper (I used parchment paper but Kraft paper or newspaper works just fine).

After the glue dries, which is pretty quick, tie a pretty glitter ribbon around the top of each jar, securing it with a bow. You could leave your frosted mason jar votives like this, if you like a simpler look.

Embellish the frosted mason jar votives with a holiday sprig. I simply tucked the stem under the ribbon. I clip small pieces of greenery from a larger stem or floral spray. It’s cheaper than buying smaller, individual stems.

Tuck a small LED tea light inside the mason jars. You could use real candles, too. But then you have to clean the wax out of the jars.

Half of my frosted mason jar votives have gold ribbon.

The other half wear pink ribbons. Any color will do. And this project doesn’t have to be limited to Christmas. They’d make great centerpieces for DIY weddings or other celebrations.

I lined my stairway with the frosted mason jar votives.. The lights cast such a cozy glow as the sun sets.

There are so many ways you can use these. Place them in windows, on a mantel, or use them in a centerpiece.

  2. I have some jars and was wondering about making candles and these are perfect. I am sorry about answering your questions it was a busy day. No i didn’t tie the bag, i just squeezed it shut a little. You do not have to brown the turkey, When it is done you just remove the paper bag and it is brown and juicy. Sometimes it will stick to the bag but it doesn’t hurt it. Hope this is helpful. I know it sounds crazy but it really works.

  3. Peggy I believe it is just the regular matte finish modge podge . You can buy the smaller bottles at the Dollar Tree or Micheal’s and for you Jo Anne’s. The gliter can be any type but I buy a more fine kind for this kind of project and either silver or white. But you can use whatever color you like.

  4. I am just n love with this simple project, but now those wheels in my head are spinning. What do you think about using the green or red tinted mason jars, too much? I am going to share this with all my friends as soon as I make a few for my own décor.
