Governor’s Summer House: New England

Walk into a light and breezy historic home by Lisa Tharp Design that was once a Governor’s summer house. Period details were left intact despite the home’s contemporary vibe, creating a unique living space. Upon immediate entry, you notice the beautiful diamond pattern painted onto the wood floors.

The entryway is my favorite part of the Governor’s summer house. I’m not usually impressed by most foyers, but this one has a beautiful curved staircase and checkerboard floor.

Step into the white living room and you’ll see the pretty contemporary aesthetic. Deep set windows are left unadorned so their architecture can be appreciated.

The casual dining area incorporates a beautiful sofa with a wooden farmhouse table and pendant light. Simple cafe curtains and a woven rug emphasize the casual space.

The kitchen in the Governor’s summer house marries farmhouse style in the form of open shelving with the contemporary backdrop of a marble back splash.

Texture is added to rooms which helps warm the spaces. Natural bamboo shades at the windows hang above built-in seating with pillows and a soft throw.

The formal dining room is decorated with a minimalist approach, allowing the custom table to take center stage.

One of the main bedrooms keeps architectural detailing on the walls while adding contemporary touches like a looking glass ball pendant light.

This New England home is stately but welcoming, classic with its white brick and black shutters.

  1. I really appreciate the homes you are featuring from New England lately. I grew up in the Boston area, which I think this home is in or near. Now I live on the coast of Maine so the homes from that state are of particular interest, too. Thank you for all the great blogs.

  2. Another beautiful home – and I agree that the foyer is amazing. The staircase looks a little scary to navigate, but that painted wood floor is just perfect.

  3. Another beautiful old home with wonderful interior, and the exterior looks really nice too.

    1. Such a delightful home to tour. The simple yet elegant decorating style is just what appeals to me during this extremely hot and humid weather we are having in N.C. this summer. I was born and raised in Connecticut and Colonial homes like this one.
