Light and Airy Beach Cottage: Perfect for Year-Round Living

In the midst of winter, we could all use a light and airy beach cottage, am I right? When you first set eyes on the exterior of this beautiful home by Cortney Bishop Design, you imagine yourself walking along the boardwalk through the landscape, enjoying the views, until you reach the front door.

When the front door opens, you’re greeted with a graceful arch beneath an impressive staircase. Then you notice that you can see all the way through the house where outdoor views await you in the living room. I love when houses are designed with a line of sight in mind.

Waiting to greet you in the entryway are a pair of charming sheep, black and white. The white one looks like it’s grazing on the rug. A black bench and black and white artwork on the wall emphasize the simple color scheme. I had a pair of faux sheep in my first home, but they were smaller than this.

Walk on through that front hallway to the back of the house where amazing views can be enjoyed from the neutral living room. You’ll find more whimsical art pieces like the little side table with eucalyptus in a vase. The room is serene with its soft white upholstery and rich, wood ceiling.

This living room is sunken and from this angle, you can see the beauty of the front door. The color palette from the entryway is echoed through the striped rug and pillows.

This chaise section of the sofa is the perfect place to enjoy a good book while sometimes being distracted by the scenery. The artwork here isn’t something I’d choose, but to each her own. That’s what makes design and decorating so interesting – seeing how others pull things together.

The dining room caught my eye. Vertical paneling covers the lower two-thirds of the walls, while a faintly patterned wallpaper adorns the top third. I like the use of the transom window above the entry to the family room. And the light fixture – I love it. I’m currently shopping for a new pendant light for my own dining room and am settled on something natural like a rattan or basket style light.

Step into the cottage beach kitchen for more whimsy in the form of black and white graphic flooring. Clusters of lights serve as matching pendants above the kitchen island.

Floating wood shelves create space for displaying favorite dishes and serving pieces.

The family room enjoys a game corner bathed in natural light. Macrame work on the chairs adds texture to the space. Have you noticed that the rugs throughout the beach cottage all bear some type of graphic element of stripes and geometric shapes?

Another view of the family room shows access to the dining room and kitchen, revealing the appealing floor plan of this stunning home. The large comfy sectional invites you to sink yourself into it.

You’ll find transom windows above the doorways leading into the bedrooms. The bedding enjoys a bit of a southwestern vibe, and I’m completely smitten by the little bird pillow.

The bathroom features a large mirror over the wood vanity with marble top and brushed gold hardware.

Another bedroom features a wood ceiling fan above a black four-poster bed. The bedding is simple while a strong graphic rug makes an eye-catching statement.

A lot of fun nights are sure to happen in this clever bunk room featuring a dark ceiling, school lights, ladders to the upper beds, and built-in drawers.

A second game area in the beach cottage wears the same black paneled ceiling. The pendant light is fun and quirky, and I’m wondering whether it’s hard to dust (now I sound like my mother).

I hope you enjoyed today’s beach cottage by Cortney Bishop Design as much as I did. There are plenty of fun elements throughout this beautiful home.

  1. I love black and white. There are so many great rugs in this cottage. Do you know where they came from? Thanks for all the inspiration.

  2. Nice! I find white a little harsh, prefer ivory, but a lovely home. I too love some of the rugs and wonder where they came from. This looks like a really thoughtfully designed vacation home. The spacious peaceful feeling is very attractive.
