New Wisconsin Farmhouse Tour: It’s a Vacation Rental!

Finally I’m getting around to sharing pictures of the Wisconsin farmhouse we rented through VRBO. Every summer my kids and their families join me for a vacation somewhere not too far from home. They have little ones and that doesn’t make for a pleasant car ride, so we try to keep the drive a few hours or less. In early August we headed toward Deerfield which is just east of Madison. This newer traditional home features comfortable farmhouse style and plenty of space to spread out.

The house is located on a country road at the top of a small hill. We always need a fairly big house for the entire family, but when you split the cost with everyone, our vacations are pretty affordable. We always like to find a rental with a porch or deck to enjoy morning coffee or an evening glass of wine outside.

I was the first one to arrive, which was good because it gave me a chance to take photos before everyone hauled their stuff in and started getting messy. My first impression was a good one. My daughter Bridget showed up next so I took a photo of her in the entryway with baby Cove.

Luckily none of the kids broke any of the glass jars here in the entryway. The other day we were looking for next summer’s vacation rental and we came across a gorgeous beach house but there was a lot of white furniture, which although pretty, is not conducive to wee ones and their sticky fingers. So we had to pass.

To the left of the Wisconsin farmhouse entryway is this little game nook with the coolest chess set I’ve ever seen. I love the comfy poufs which are the perfect height for the table. Much to my surprise, my oldest grandson (he’s already 16!) played for the first time with my son-in-law and he loved it.

Right next to the chess area is the family/living room with a television. The cabinet below the TV is the same as the one I have in my dining room.

At the far end of the family room is a game table, and just beyond that is the pretty sunroom.

Rough hewn paneling lines one wall in the sunroom with a vaulted ceiling and skylights. Lots of cozy rugs throughout the home.

One set of sliding doors led to the cozy deck while another set of sliders on the opposite wall led to a large patio with fire pit and hot tub. I love that the vacation rental had live plants in it instead of fake ones.

Right off the family room is the farmhouse style kitchen that didn’t disappoint. Not only is it pretty, but it had everything we needed for cooking and eating.

Check out the bead board ceiling. We had this in my childhood home only it was natural wood, not painted. My dad installed it himself. He was always pretty handy.

The kitchen island with cooktop is wrapped in rough hewn wood planks – similar (if not the same) as the sunroom wall.

From this view you can see how the Wisconsin farmhouse kitchen is open to a large dining area adjacent to the living room. Each family took a turn making dinner one night. I made my favorite spaghetti recipe with sauce made from fresh tomatoes, along with a salad and garlic breadsticks.

The big round wood table was big enough for all of us to fit around – even though we were elbow to elbow. I love the red chairs!

Just off the kitchen is the bedroom where I slept. Hubby didn’t come with me this time so I took the bedroom no one else wanted. I don’t mind sleeping in a twin bed. As long as the mattress is comfortable I’m good to go. I could see the goats and their barn from the window.

Also on the first floor just off the entryway is the smaller of two master bedrooms.

The upstairs master bedroom was pretty amazing. Love that dark wall! We always rotate who gets the master when we go on family vacations.

I love the choice of bedding throughout the house. Beds are very important when renting through VRBO or Airbnb. The beds were horrible in the house we rented last summer, even though it had a 5-star rating. If you ever see a review that says the beds weren’t great, I advise you to steer clear.

Here’s a couple of the goats that live on the property. We got to feed them everyday, which the kids (the human ones) loved.

The entire family loved this Wisconsin farmhouse. If you ever want to go on a farm vacation that still has all the modern conveniences, this VRBO rental property fills the bill!

  1. You got me at the goats. Love them and what a sweet place to have a gathering of family all around. So happy you had a nice time. Time just zooms by and what memories you will have to look back upon. A beach house would be great too if they all like the water. Nothing beats sitting by the water with a glass of wine or coffee. Calming.

  2. What a great place for your whole family to stay. Those goats were so cute and so was that first picture of your grandbaby. Family is so important and pray these vacations will have lasting memories for all.

  3. Hi Jennifer. I have been away for awhile and just now found your blog again. I love this style show and am going through all the beautiful homes. I love the little fur hosts of this place. How fun to feed them everyday. Happy New Week. xoxo Kris
