A Porch Swing To While Away the Hours

porch June 15, 2022

Is there anything more nostalgic in summer than whiling away the hours on a porch swing? Enjoying a gentle breeze while swaying to and fro on a swing brings back memories of simpler times that were far less rushed and frazzled.

To “while away” means to pass the time in a pleasant way. An upholstered swing on a front porch creates a comfortable place to enjoy a summer day or evening. Sometimes when it’s especially hot and humid, you don’t have a lot of energy so the porch becomes a welcome respite from chores or tasks.

Of course, the swing doesn’t have to be outside. You can enjoy one on a three-season porch, too. It’d be comforting to take a little catnip on this unique fabric swing.

Boho chic style swings are becoming more popular and I could easily see this one at my daughter’s house. In fact, she has an enclosed back porch where a swing like this would be perfect.

I love this modern take for summer swinging! It reminds me of a playground swing for adults.

A pair of rattan swings are a clever alternative to the classic, larger swing you typically see. Pillows are a must because the reeds of these chairs can sometimes be uncomfortable.

And here it is! The nostalgic porch swing that you’d expect to see in an old TV show like Andy Griffith. The porch provides shade on a hot summer day and the movement in the swing creates a gentle breeze. All that’s missing is you – and a glass of iced tea!

If you don’t have room on a porch for a swing, you could always try a glider which can go on a porch, deck, or even in the yard where space allows!

Thanks Jennifer, these are wonderful ideas and they do sell a lot of different kinds. I want one for my back porch, i have a glider on my front screened in porch. It’s my favorite place to be Spring and Fall on my screened in porch.

I can certainly picture that chair at Bridget’s house! And more plants too, of course😉 I don’t think I ever mentioned that I almost bought a house very similar to Bridget’s. I think it is looking quite lovely.

I love the upholstered swing. One of my most nostalgic memories of growing up on a Missouri farm is sitting in the porch swing with my mother at dusk in our nightgowns after a hard day of farm chores, including evening milking, followed by a cooling bath, watching night fall. Northwest Missouri is very green and hilly and beautiful in the gloaming.
