Pretty Fall Vignettes: Inside and Out

Officially the calendar says it’s fall, but outside it’s a sweltering 90-degrees here outside of Chicago. And the heat is supposed to continue for the next several days. Ugh. Still, I’m keeping an autumn state of mind and am sharing a few pretty fall vignettes with you that might help you get your own home ready for the changing of the seasons.

Pumpkins and Gourds

Okay, so this category of fall vignettes is pretty obvious. When in doubt, grab a pumpkin or two. They look perfectly fine on their own, but it can be fun to play around and dress them up a bit. I love gray pumpkins and paired this one from my fall kitchen with blush berries and elevated it on a cake stand. A couple of small ghost pumpkins tumble below.

A wooden box cradles a bounty of baby boos. This works in a bowl, a wire crate, whatever you might have on hand. Tuck in a few leaves or fall berries to add a little color and interest. Place a few baby boos outside the vessel to give it a tousled look.

Pumpkins always look great on a fall front porch. I tucked a few orange zinnias in an old bottle for a shot of autumn color. A wooden box underneath adds a little height to the outdoor fall vignette.

Add pumpkins and gourds to create a fall dining hutch, or any place you have dishes on display. I wrapped a stretch of grapevine around the white pumpkin for added texture.

In a previous fall home tour, I filled a wire cloche with a mound of baby boos and then placed it on an old shutter I used as a table runner.

Natural Outdoor Elements

Not only do branches, berries, and colorful leaves make pretty fall vignettes, but it’s an inexpensive way to decorate, too.

Clip a few sunflowers from your garden and pair them with autumn gourds. You can usually find sunflowers at the grocery store if you didn’t grow any in your yard.

Natural elements don’t have to be limited to branches and leaves. Create pretty fall vignettes with edible items like pears and chestnuts.

One thing about decorating with fall branches is that the arrangement doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, a little haphazardness looks better.

Even humble apples make for pretty fall vignettes. Either a bowl or a basket is a great choice.

And if you don’t feel like going out in the yard for some clippings, you can purchase faux stems and berries at your local craft store – like this arrangement from my fall entryway.

Other Ideas for Fall Vignettes

When decorating your own home, remember it’s okay to break the rules. You don’t have to use oranges, yellows, and browns. Last year on my fall mantel I paired aqua with white.

Candles are always a cozy choice for fall vignettes. Votives tucked inside mason jars make a pretty centerpiece.

I think old globes are great for fall vignettes. The globe reminds me of school, and school reminds me of the autumn season and the return to classes.

  1. The blush berries are so sw-ee-t! I’m really into copper right now. Kinda gone copper crazy! So we’re having a metallic Fall and probably Christmas. It’s fun with all my blue and white. 🙂

  2. Your ideas are terrific!
We feed the birds, rabbits, squirrels year round and feed among other things, cracked corn.
Perfect filler for those candles in the mason jars.
