Red Barn in Snow: The Best Winter Scene

My goal this January is to not only help myself enjoy winter more, but to do the same for you! So I’ve gathered together something I love seeing in winter – a red barn in snow!

Red Finnish House and Barn in the Snow

Above is a Finnish house with a small barn. I’ve decided that in order to find their home in the snow and dark, the Scandinavians paint their houses red.

My family and I are talking about visiting Norway in 2021. I read that in the winter it barely gets light out right around noon, and that’s it. On the flip side, the sun is up for almost 24 hours during the summer.

A red barn in snow looks quaint and charming to me, and we have plenty of them here where the ‘burbs of Chicago meet the prairies and farm fields of Illinois.

According to the farmer’s almanac, the earliest barns were red because farmers would use linseed oil as a sealant on the barns. Rust was added to the oil because it kills moss and fungi that might grown and barns. The rust turned the linseed oil red. Today barns are painted red as a nod to history.

My favorite snow is when it’s thick and heavy and leaves a thick flocking on trees and bushes. What a beautiful scene! Add a rustic red barn in snow and you’ve got the perfect winter wonderland.

Why not amp up the curb appeal with a matching red fence?

My friend Doreen shared a quote on her blog Hymns and Verses that resonates with me. Repeating it helps me better enjoy this time of year.

“Winter remind us that everyone and everything needs some quiet time.”

  1. I’m really not missing the snow but I can definitely appreciate the beauty of it. Especially with a red barn.

  3. I love red barns as well. When I was growing up, one of our neighbors had a red barn with horses. It always smelled of manure, hay and of course, horse. Thankfully, I never had to muck the stalls. The shovel was almost bigger than me back then. I have lots of fond memories of red barns though because of those horses. Beautiful pics.

  4. Lovely pictures and I love snow but sadly here on the west coast of Canada these last few years have not seen any snow.
