Rocking Chairs for the Front Porch

Does anything give a call to warmer weather more than a pair of outdoor rocking chairs? Spending a bit of idle time rocking on the porch with a glass of lemonade or iced tea stirs up a nostalgic and simpler time. (This post contains affiliate links.)

A pair of simple wooden rocking chairs enjoy a street-side view and makes you feel like you live in Mayberry RFD. And on a side note – what a gorgeous and healthy peace lily just behind the rockers!

I love this style of wicker rocking chair. It would look equally pretty inside the house as it does outside.

Before I even looked to see where this photo was taken, I knew it had to be somewhere in the low country. Sure enough, it’s a scene from Beaufort, South Carolina that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting more than once. The slat board rocking chairs are an iconic Southern classic.

I rocked my oldest daughter to sleep on many nights in a white wicker rocking chair just like this one. Her chair was in a corner of her yellow nursery as opposed to the front sun porch in our little bungalow home.

Rocking chairs on the porch don’t have to match. An eclectic mix can be charming and appealing.

  1. I love a wicker rocker with a cushion. Having a favorite rocker is easy – having a big enough porch to enjoy it on – not so easy. I’ve wanted a big shady porch my entire adult life and am still waiting. Not giving up quite yet. 🙂

  2. Porches are a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by! We recently moved to a new home and state, now in Flagstaff, AZ. One thing on my list of must haves was a front porch. Just finished repainting a wooden bench that was left with the house. Now I need to make a couple of pillows to add to the relaxing atmosphere!

  3. I would love a covered porch, but living in an A-Frame house you get nothing but decks… but we do have a covered pool deck so that helps some but it’s still not the same…One day maybe.

  4. Ahhh, I’d love to be rocking one of my grand babies in a sturdy, cushioned, wicker rocker looking out over a lake, or the beach. Right now.

  5. I have a screened porch on front and i need a rocker bad, that is on my list along with a ceiling fan, it’s my favorite place to sit. I like my back porch it’s a good size but right now i have babies and their mom goes crazy when i sit back there, birds they are so funny.

  6. My whole life I have dreamed of leaving the rat race of the western suburbs of Chicago and finding a old farmhouse in the country with a porch. 5 years ago I got laid off my job at 58 yo and took the plunge. Found a 100 yo fixer upper near Galena (love your articles about Galena btw!) and it has a wrap around front porch facing the hills and a few fields of cows. No neighbors – just peace and quiet, cows and a night sky filled with more stars than I ever knew were there.

The very FIRST thing I purchased for the house was four rocking chairs for my porch. I dreamed of vintage wicker but the practical side of me went with white faux wicker vinyl from Martha Stewart at HD. (Charlottetown White All-Weather Wicker Patio Rocking Chair with Washed Blue Cushion – $139) Got a couple of matching footstools and a glass topped coffee table in the same line. They’ve held up great, clean easily with gentle soap and hosing off in the sun. I keep them covered in the winter. I don’t know if they’re still available but I’m sure there are similar chairs available somewhere.

I know this post is a couple years old but I thought I would add my comments in case anyone was wondering about this type of rocker.

I love your blog and all the stories about your lovely home and all the wonderful pictures of vintage homes from your travels. There’s something so special about living in a vintage home. Thank you for your wonderful blog!

  7. Who doesn’t love a porch rocker?!!! This is a great post bringing lots of smiles and ideas. I am sending your blog link to my 11 year old granddaughter who wants to be an interior designer. She will love it!

  8. I love all rockers and have two. One like the hickory and the other is a really old fashioned one that is wood too but has a fabric skirt that a friend of mine was going to throw away when she was downsizing. While they are different I love them both but my favorite is the one with the skirt it is so comfy. I had one on each patio at my old home but I have recently moved and while I have a deck along the one side I still have yet to put a cover over part of it at least so that I may enjoy my rockers again this summer, for now I have them in my master bedroom.

  9. HOA can I put beneath under my rocking chairs to keep it from fading or the paint getting on my decking board front porch

  10. Love the second story porch looking out at the tree tops. It is so cozy! I could stay there all day, with a good book and a cup of hot tea! Thanks for sharing all the porch pictures. There is absolutely nothing better than a good porch. Well, except maybe chocolate!
