Summer Centerpiece Ideas for Your Home: Bring on the Color

I’m on a mission. I’m decluttering my horizontal surfaces as much as possible so that I can enjoy a more minimalist approach to decorating for the summer season. The idea is to let flowers and plants do the talking throughout the house. The first room I’m tackling is the dining room and the focal point will be a summer centerpiece for the table. Here’s some ideas if you’d like to implement the same approach to your summer décor.

Peonies bloom anywhere from late spring to early summer, depending on where you live and what type of peony you have. They’re a great choice for cutting and arranging due to their large flowers and sturdy stems. Not to mention, they add a punch of color to any room.

 

Look how cute they are when the stems are cut short and they’re placed in a pretty, low-profile container. This is the type of arrangement you can set on a buffet, chest of drawers, entry table – you name it.

 

My absolute favorite type of flower arrangement for a summer centerpiece is a wildflower bouquet. They look best when they’re a bit messy, which means you don’t have to possess a knack for arranging. Wildflowers are also free if you pick them from alongside the road – which is important right now with prices so high everywhere you turn. Take a large pail with some water in it and drive out to the country with some gardening shears. Collect a few stems of wild grass while you’re at it.

Here’s a couple of wildflower arrangements I’ve made in years past. I posted a tutorial for this arrangement. It can be used as a summer centerpiece or as decoration anywhere.

 

 

A summer centerpiece doesn’t have to consist of flowers. Use fruits or even vegetables in creative ways. If you’re hosting dinner, people can squeeze the lemon into their water or on their food, so the centerpiece is useful and pretty at the same time.

 

 

Summer flowers always look great with vintage items if you want to create a pretty vignette.

 

Of course, who says your vase needs flowers? A couple years ago I created a summer centerpiece using pastel blue and green vases.

 

How sweet is a singular hydrangea in a little round vase?

 

I used faux hydrangeas for one of my past table settings. My hydrangeas in the garden are still fairly young and don’t produce a ton of blooms just yet, so I had to use silk ones.

 

Interesting vases or vessels are almost important as the flowers themselves. A pretty pink depression glass pedestal bowl cradles this gorgeous arrangement.

 

Or keep it simple with another one of my favorite cut flowers – zinnias.

 

While I wait for the flowers in the garden to get enough blooms for a summer centerpiece, I’ll work on clearing out the clutter. With less dusting, I can spend more time outside with my flowers, vegetables, and pond fish!
