Summer Farmhouse Decorating Tips

The two biggest decorating seasons in our country home are Christmas and Summer.  Christmas is an obvious choice, and since summer is the time when I can bring flowers in from the yard, it ranks right up there with our favorite December holiday. Farmhouse decorating is really quite easy because the style is unpretentious, economical, and rather simple. Won’t you join me on a tour of a few rooms in my home while I share a few summer farmhouse decorating tips?

The Living Room

Entry Way of Farm HouseA decoupage desk greets you at the entry way of my home. I purchased that desk for just $35 and refinished it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and added script paper to the top and drawer fronts. A smart farmhouse decorating tip is to repurpose furniture. Farmhouses are meant to have character with slightly worn pieces throughout.

Farmhouse DecoratingSlipcovers are a must when it comes to farmhouse decorating. They provide a casual, lived in style. A rooster pillow has farmhouse written all over it!

Bird on Shelf with Boulangerie signA smaller bird sits on a shelf made from an old barn board. I love pulling in a few rustic elements like beat-up wood.

Farmhouse Style with painted woodworkThe walls are painted with Martha Stewart paint in Lacecap, which draws its hue from a hydrangea.

Painted stair case in a country farm houseAnother farmhouse decorating tip is to paint your floors. They hold up surprisingly well to busy feet and furry friends. During the summer, I like to keep window treatments simple so lots of sunshine streams in. I painted a branch from the yard with white paint and then hung a string of paper butterflies down the side.

Country farmhouse style at Town and Country LivingI’ve used bamboo script mats on the floors throughout our home. They’re durable and easy to clean!

Town and Country Living RoomIn the summer, I try to de-clutter as much as possible for a fresher, easier look.

Pink Kalanchoe in Living RoomFresh flowers are a must when it comes to summer farmhouse decorating. Pink Kalanchoe leads the way into the dining room.

The Dining Room

Country Garden Table SettingImpatiens in white ironstone bowls take center stage at each place setting of this garden-themed tablescape.

Farmhouse Hutch with Chicken WireThe farmhouse hutch that sits in the corner has painted chicken wire for the cabinet fronts, instead of the expected glass. Truth be told, our cat broke the glass in the cabinet and I decided to replace it with the chicken wire. Lots of white inside keeps it summer-fresh!

Country Style Dining BuffetI absolutely adore my dining buffet with the mirror perched on top. Topiaries and house plants add just the right touch of green for farmhouse decorating. To me, white with green is quintessential farmhouse style.

The Kitchen

Farmhouse KitchenHere it is … the heart of the home … my farmhouse kitchen!  When I first toured this house and saw that built-in cabinet in the corner, I knew I wanted to buy this home and cook meals from scratch in this kitchen.

Breakfast Table with Virginia BluebellsVirginia Bluebells from the garden decorate the kitchen table with their droopy appeal.

IKEA Sideboard in a farmhouse kitchenThe IKEA sideboard was purchased from a friend. To add farmhouse decorating appeal in this room, we added the bead board 3/4 up the wall and painted it white, using kitchen cabinet paint which makes it easy to clean.

White Mug RackOversized white coffee mugs hang from the shelf above the sideboard.

Back Door to Farmhouse KitchenLots of sun shines into our kitchen during the summer months. Lilacs decorate the kitchen and fill the room with their wonderfully sweet fragrance.

Kitchen Shelves in a Farmhouse KitchenWe have no upper cabinets, opting instead for open shelving in the kitchen. The shelves were a DIY project and didn’t cost a lot of money.

The Family Room

Family Room at Town and Country LivingMoving into the family room, you can see I’ve used slipcovers and throws on the furniture, using light colors and lots of white to pull everything together. Using white or another unifying color is key to keeping farmhouse decorating from looking too hodge podge.

Family room with burlap curtain swagsThe windows in the family room wear landscape burlap swags draped over fallen branches from the yard. Landscape burlap is much softer than regular burlap … perfect for farmhouse window treatments.

The Front Porch

Farmhouse Front PorchOur front porch is looking more like summer every day. Soon it will be brimming with impatiens and summer breezes. Stay tuned for more photos of our porch as a few things are changing out here!

So glad you stopped by for a tour of my summer farmhouse decorating style. A variety of flowers from the garden will be brought inside over the months … depending on what’s in bloom at the time!

  1. Jennifer, I just love your farmhouse style in your old home. I think it’s beautiful, so simple and you always show how one can use old things – furniture, dishes etc. – to achieve this look. Thanks for sharing your fresh farmhouse style for summer. Blessings, Pam

  2. I always enjoy seeing your home. I simply love it. I don’t remember ever seeing a table in your kitchen before. So that was new to me.

  3. Your summer house is looking beautiful Jennifer and I love your use of fresh flowers too. I used to have an old fashioned picking garden in my old house, but it’s too hot here in the subtropics to grow pretty cottage flowers and I really miss the vases of blooms around the house. Thanks for the home tour 🙂

  4. Everything is just beautiful! It really does look and feel like a farmhouse but with a fresh spin. I will be studying your pictures closely for ideas. 🙂

  5. I just love your farmhouse – you’ve done a fantastic job decorating it! Every room looks so cozy & welcoming & charming 🙂 The branch with the butterflies hanging from it is a great idea, and I love the corner of your kitchen decorated with lilacs. I also redally like the openness of having no upper cabinets in the kitchen.

I’m sure you’re going to enjoy every second of summer in your beautiful home 🙂

  6. Your summer decor is very pretty, I love your Farmhouse way of decorating, reminds me of my childhood friends homes, only nicer.

  8. Absolutely beautiful! I want to just grab a book and plop down on the co….uch and escape! It reminds me of a shabby chic farmhouse….just my style!! Thank you for inviting me into your home (keywords being home) it felt good!

  9. What a stunning home! I love every little detail about it. If you get a chance, please share this on my linky party:

  10. Love these rooms you’ve shown dressed for summer.
I have blankets and throws over my furniture, too. But I’m working on ‘flow’… I just don’t seem to find a restful place when I look around the room. It just doesn’t flow. You addressed that when you said you de-clutter. That is something I need to be working on still while I’m tweaking.
Your rooms give me lots of inspiration. Glad to see them, and so glad to see how comfy it looks at the same time it seems affordable. Not like some more traditional rooms that just seem costly to pull off.

You mentioned painting your floor. It is hard to tell that yours are painted, except in the dining room. Are all of these floors in this post painted? Also… what type of paint did you use? Thanks!
