Summer Flowers for Inside the Home

Part of the fun of growing summer flowers out in the garden is to cut and arrange beautiful bouquets for inside the home. My grandmother had an amazing cutting garden filled with her favorite flowers. I loved snipping their blooms with her and watching her use a favorite vase or tureen to arrange them. She could’ve easily worked in any florist shop. In her honor, today I’m sharing summer flowers arranged in a variety of vessels.

The arrangement above reminds me of something my grandma would create. She preferred rounded bouquets that were somewhat symmetrical. She’d always place one on her coffee table and dining table.

I tend to prefer arrangements that are a little less symmetrical, like this group of white gerbera daisies in a pale turquoise vase. Grocery stores sell gerbera blooms but they grow so prolifically outside. This is a good choice of flower for a cutting garden. They have somewhat sturdy stems too, which make them good for arrangements.

 

Here’s a peach Gerbera daisy nestled in a tuft of white baby’s breath. This arrangement is fool-proof for anyone who doesn’t feel like they have a flower-arranging bone in their body.

 

Hydrangeas and roses look so pretty together in a round, pink box. You can find paper mache boxes at the craft store. Paint them with acrylic paint to customize (or leave them bare). Put the flowers in a mason jar or similar, and then place inside the box.

 

Summer flowers come in a rainbow of colors and there’s no limit to what kind of bouquet you can create. I don’t believe in any rules for pairing colors. I mean, look at any field of wildflowers and you’ll see all the colors look great together. Go with soft, pastel flowers, or bold and vivid colors like orange, purple, and yellow.

 

Wild flowers are an absolute favorite of mine. I’m talking wild flowers that you pick from the side of a country road. I feel like I’m borrowing a bit of artistry from God’s canvas when clipping a few of these wild beauties for an indoor arrangement. There’s nothing formal about this – it looks breezy and carefree just like a summer’s day!

 

When arranging wild flowers, get super creative with your “vase.” Here, a vintage tin mailbox creates a unique vessel for displaying these sweet, summer beauties. Flea markets are a great place for finding unique vases.

 

An old brass pitcher gives Shasta daisies a country vibe. To create an display like this, arrange the flowers in your hand and the tuck them into the pitcher. Don’t do any more arranging! It’s that easy.

 

I started this post off with my grandmother, and I’ll end it with my mother. Daisies were her favorite flower and you could always make her smile with a cute arrangement of them.
