Are you ready for a home tour that’s a little different than what you’re used to seeing here at Town and Country Living? Get ready for warm wood, fun colors, and interesting patterns in this Swedish cottage by Verge Temme Architecture tucked just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin!

Step through the front door, above, and you’re greeted with warm planked walls, an octagonal-patterned stone floor, and a painted stair railing with cut-out hearts. The entryway pretty much sets the stage for the rest of the house.

The dining room features an amazing vaulted ceiling with a beautiful floral mural painted on the wood slats. This image immediately reminded me of paintings by Swedish painter, Carl Larsson.

The kitchen embraces a European cottage charm with tinted-stained cabinets in a blue-gray tone. Red accents lends a touch of vibrancy to the space.

Cottage fabric creates softness at the windows and vintage appeal to the apron sink. The colors are reminiscent of the palette used in Carl Larsson’s Swedish cottage.

Knotty pine paneling dominates the living room with its mix of warm reds and cool blues. An old trunk and a storage tin on the coffee table are painted with traditional Swedish patterns.

The upstairs railing features more Swedish influence while adding color to the wood-planked walls. The ceiling is given a treatment of painted bead board.

A Dala horse motif adorns the built-in bed. The Dala horse received global attention at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York and are now a familiar symbol of Sweden.

Yellow and blue are classic Swedish colors since they’re the colors of the country’s flag. Note the Scandinavian style railing on the balcony outside – this one is left unpainted.

A Swedish cottage often has nooks and crannies, which add to their charm and appeal.

The home’s rustic exterior blends in with the surrounding woods. It looks like the trees are hugging the home, making it feel cozy despite its large size.

  1. Hi Jennifer. I continue to love reading your blogs. You always have something that interests me. I wanted to let you know that after reading that you recently started NOOM I was encouraged to start the weight loss journey. I have used other programs in the past but this one seems best suited for these strange times of COVID. I just wanted to thank you and wish you luck on your journey.

  2. Having Swedish ancestry on my maternal side I have always been drawn to Scandinavian decor. My guestroom is done in blue and yellow with white accents and I never really connected the colors of the swedish flag when I choose the colors. We actually took a trip many years ago to Sweden and Denmark and I purchased some Dala Horses that always come out at Christmas.I love the warm ,cozy feeling in this cottage. Thankyou for bringing back so many nice memories.

  3. I love this home, the extras make it so personal and lovely. My father’s family were Swedish and I love their style. Thanks and have a great week.
