The Angel Who Almost Got Away

Someone once told me we’re creative because we’re made in the image of God, and God is the ultimate creator. We are all creators of something. Some of us create homes for our families, some create ideas for others to execute, and some of us create trouble! And sometimes we re-create, expanding on someone else’s original idea. Recently I found an angel at the thrift store that I thought would look better with a little enhancement. Here she is after I had some fun giving her a makeover.

I chose a soft, monotone look for my new angel.
She looked like this at the thrift store. I almost passed her up.
Her face looked a bit cartoonish to me.
She’s solid wood and about 2 feet tall. I wasn’t crazy her, but saw potential.
An angel should look softer and more statuesque, in my humble opinion.
I first gave her a base coat of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Gray …
… and left the wings untouched. Next step was to bring out some definition.
Next came a white wash of half-paint, half-water. I wiped about half of it off.
A little bit of sanding lent an aged appearance.
To think I almost passed her up. But I kept going back to the aisle where she sat.
I wasn’t convinced the detail of her face would show up after aging her a bit.
But at $6.99, I finally caved in and snatched her up. I’m glad I did.
Now I feel she looks properly statuesque as opposed to a cartoon character.

  1. I actually didn’t mind the original look too much, but I definitely like yours better! I love how tall she is! When I’m thrift shopping I always pick up whatever I think I MIGHT want so that no one else can get it. (Bad me.) Then I put back anything I end up not wanting. That way I (hopefully) don’t have to kick myself TOO much when I get home:)

  2. Great makeover…I will usually pass things like this by when I see them…I need to remember a little paint goes a long way!!! Super job!

  3. I might have passed her up too, you are right a little too cute. However she looks wonderful painted!! She looks like expensive folk art. Will start looking at those items with a new eye. Thanks, Laura

  4. Jennifer – what a beautiful transformation! From cartoon to tres chic! She almost looks like she’s made out of aged cement now. Great job, girlie!
