The Other Corner of My Kitchen

Before I go to town on the kitchen, I thought I’d share the corner that’s getting a little work done. Keep in mind, this is a kitchen housed in an 1875 farmhouse. I have no idea what the original kitchen looked like, but I know for a fact in didn’t have these stock cabinets. (I posted the other part of my kitchen in an earlier post here.)

The cabinets are currently painted with Martha Stewart paint in Tortilla.
The beadboard is Ultra White, and I can’t remember the color of the walls.
My brother-in-law says the floors are Mexican tile but I’m not sure about that.
I’ve always loved the trio of windows above the kitchen sink.
These lace curtains are gonna go, I may leave the windows bare or use muslin instead.
The little shelf inside the back door is getting swapped out.
Haven’t figured out yet what will replace it but I’ve got my eyes open.
A bit of freesia and baby’s breath to brighten up a rainy, gloomy day.
The kitchen island isn’t huge but it holds all my baking supplies just fine.
It was a housewarming gift from my parents shortly after moving in.
It’ll be getting a slight makeover since I could use a larger work surface.
Or who knows, I may just replace it with something completely different.
On occasion we eat at the kitchen island and sit on the stools that I refinished months ago.
This morning I sat here with coffee and a banana nut muffin while looking at Country Home magazine.
After Thanksgiving is over, it’ll be time to say goodbye to all the gourds.
I haven’t been able to bring myself to haul out the Christmas goodies yet.
Found these festive bosch pears at the grocery store.
Pears always remind me of the holidays, although I’m not sure why.
I’m hoping to replace the laminate countertop with some type of wood.
Luckily not much is needed since most of the kitchen consists of free standing pieces.
The microwave sits on an old bead board cabinet but I don’t have a good picture of it.
Hopefully the kitchen will be done by January or February.
How about you? Do you have any plans for your kitchen coming up soon?

  3. Your kitchen is so bright and looks like a lovely place to work in. I love a big window over the sink. We totally renovated our kitchen last year but never did the backsplash yet. I’m hoping to do bead board for it in the new year.

  5. Your kitchen is so bright and cheery…..LOVE the back door with window, really old fashioned!!! No changes in my kitchen, since I built this house and planned the best kitchen I could, its all good!!! And I also have the same stove!!!

  6. I, too, love all the windows and french door in your kitchen! Wouldn’t it be fun if you could see photos of the kitchen as it was when the house was built? I like your kitchen just as it is, but I know you’ll turn it into a showstopper!

  7. I can totally see where you are going with your island cart. I got a vision on that, but I’ll be surprised with the rest of the kitchen. The only plans I have for mine are doing dishes. Maybe.

  8. Been there, done that on the kitchen — so glad it’s all behind me! Your kitchen is so fresh and light and airy. Adore those windows over your sink. Actually, the floor does look like Mexican tile with a color baked in — not really close enough to tell for sure.

  9. Your kitchen is pretty already, mine needs a major overhaul. It’s still in the 90’s country phase…yuck! I’m looking forward to seeing your new touches.

  10. Your kitchen is so full of charm, but I’m sure you’re looking forward to finishing all the renovations. The windows over your sink bring in so much light and probably makes your kitchen seem larger than it is.

  11. Kitchens. The heart of the home.Always a work in progress.I love the windows in yours so full of light.
We have remodeled, the kitchen,3 times in the 42 years we have lived in this 100 year old house.
The last, was major, in 2007.
I do have the paint to paint the base cupboards of the new island. We were so wore out just put a coat of sealer on them. Time for a little change.

  12. Your kitchen is so bright, happy and welcoming, Jennifer! I love it! You are so lucky to have it all white like that. I’ve been living with oak cabinets and ceiling for 6 years now and STILL want to paint them white. Got some more pursuading to do with hubby on that issue. lol I’m so looking forward to watching this transformation! 🙂

  13. Your kitchen is lovely, Jennifer, but I can’t wait to see how it changes in your creative hands! I love the picture with the pretty stool and the books and freesia in particular, and the pears in the basket. It’s fun to eat in spots where you don’t always take a meal–I bet it’s fun to eat at the island atop the stools!

  14. Love your kitchen as is. Construction/remodel work make syour life crazy but it is so worth it! I’ve always wanted to paint our kitchen cabinets white, but it hasn’t happened so far….can’t wait to see yours when it’s done.

  15. Hi Jeniffer!!

I love the way the kitchen looks. It’s so pretty and fresh looking. Houses with histories have always fascinated me. I love eastern Canada for that reason.

    Have a great week!!

  16. Visiting from BNOTP – I love your kitchen!! Well, the built-ins I love, and I love your plans for the rest of it. My kitchen only dates to 1898, but I don’t have any gorgeous built-ins like you have…just hideous 1970s brown stock cabinets in ALL the wrong sizes. I have been working on restoring it to more of how it should be with some actually antique cabinets, but it will always be a bit of a hodgepodge. And may I say that I am extremely jealous of your stools? I have one plain wooden bar stool in that same general shape (round seat, long legs), and will probably try to scare up a few more on craigslist and give them a matching paint/stain job, but I loooooove those beautiful turned-wood legs that yours have. That really would be the perfect fit. Where did you find them???

Last bit of rambling: your BIL may be right. The first thing I thought when I saw that floor was, “That looks just like Saltillo tile! But Saltillo tile isn’t green – is it?” So I did some looking around. Here is a really thorough explanation of Saltillo tile: http://www.mexicantileandstone.com/products/saltillo1.htm. And here’s a picture of their typical look: http://www.mexicoguru.com/design/tiles.php. My googling doesn’t come up with any green Saltillo, although I did find some green Talavera (Mexican ceramic art style) tiles marketed as an ideal accent to (red) Saltillo tiles. Hmm…kind of like this: http://uglyhousephotos.com/wordpress/?p=2445. (That blogger is dumb. That’s a really nice floor.) So…your tiles are mysterious, but they are definitely handmade, I would say. I rather like them. Are you in the Southwest? If so, they could be original to the kitchen, maybe…

  17. I think your kitchen is wonderful. I have a small kitchen with white cabinets and I want to spruce it up. It isn’t my kitchen though. My husband is the chief chef and bottle washer.

  18. That does look like Mexican tile but I’ve never seen it in that color. I really love it! Are you keeping it? I’m sure your little kitchen redo will turn out lovely. I have made small changes to my kitchen but there is still a long list of things I’d like to do to it. If I had money…which I do not…I’d have new cabinets built that look original to the house and I’d have a vintage or vintage looking stove. But for now…I’m happy with what I’ve got. The only thing that I desperately need in there is a new floor.

  19. I love your kitchen! It’s very interesting! It’s warm and draws me in. Love all the built-ins on the other side of the room and your tile floors are divine! So glad I discovered your blog on Savvy Southern Style! I’m a new follower.
