Top 5 Home Design Trends for 2015

Although I don’t consider myself a trendy person per se, I do enjoy watching trends and seeing how others use them. Zillow Digs recently announced the top 5 home design trends for 2015 and I thought it would be fun to share them with you and see how you feel about them.

1. Gold Fixtures

Kitchen by Portland Interior Designers & Decorators Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc.

Gold fixtures were popular in the 80’s and they’re making a come back.

Combine gold with silver like you see in this farmhouse kitchen.

The faucet is a brushed gold while the cabinet hardware is silver.

I’m not a huge fan of gold, but I do like it as an accent, like you see on the China here.

In fact, I have a set of gold flatware that I use on special occasions.

2. Cowhide

Traditional Porch by Atlanta Interior Designers & Decorators Lindsey Hene Interiors

Cowhide may be a trend in 2015 but I’ve been seeing it quite a bit this past year, too.

I love cowhide rugs but they’d have to be faux to come into my home.

If an entire cowhide rug is too much for your taste, you could opt for something smaller like an ottoman or even a few throw pillows in a cowhide print. I think the pillows could be pretty cute.

3. Wallpaper

Traditional Entry by Baltimore Interior Designers & Decorators Elizabeth Reich

Oh yes, wallpaper is expected to make a huge comeback in 2015! When I first moved into our current home about 17 years ago, I wallpapered our kitchen, the downstairs bathroom, and two of the bedrooms. I’ve since ripped off all the wallpaper and painted those rooms.

Funny. Just the other day I was wondering if I should get rid of my wallpaper boards since I probably would never wallpaper any rooms ever again … and then I find out wallpaper is coming back in fashion.

4. Blue Accent Colors

Entry by New York Interior Designers & Decorators Joshua Smith Inc

Marsala is Pantone’s Color of the Year in 2015, but blue accent colors will make their appearance too. In particular, indigo and navy blue as they make a beautiful complement to marsala. If you’re not a blue person, consider adding a touch of deeper blue to just one door.

Blue and white have always been a classic color combination that never goes out of style.

5. Mid Century Modern Elements

You’ve probably already been noticing the home design trend toward mid century modern. When done right, I think it can be pretty. It reminds me of my grandmother’s house.

  1. Hi Jennifer, The gold faucets made the kitchen seem a bit more airy, the cowhide would be good pillows, the wall paper is so fun,i have a little entry and that may just be what i need to brighten it up…hmm. The blue accent would be nice for my bedroom door….not crazy about modern style, only because i am a traditional type girl 🙂 thank you for sharing the trends!

  2. Hi Jennifer,
As you say it is nice to look at. A touch of gold is okay, most of my teacups have a gold rim. Since I have moved there will be gold and silver mixed here and there. I love seeing the cowhide on the cow. As for the wallpaper I love the look but I personally would only use it as an accent. I have always loved blue and white. I know that Mid Century modern is everywhere but it is not my style. Before I moved into the cottage I was thinking about painting the doors to all our rooms a rich blue colour. As it turns out I have decided to paint them all white and possibly install molding. I also found some gorgeous inexpensive glass doorknobs at Home Depot. That should really improve the look of the doors. Thank you for sharing.

  3. Good morning. The gold faucet looks nice, but I’m not into gold so would pass on that one. I love the cowhide and would definitely consider that as an accent, and like you, it would have to be faux. Wallpaper is such a great way to decorate, always has been, whether trendy or not. And, if the walls are sized in advance, it’s easy to take down and re-paper. Love, love, love that it’s coming back into fashion. There is no blue in my house, but I’ve been drawn to it over the past 6 months or so and will have to seriously think about where I could add it in. I’ll definitely pass on the mid century modern. For me, it comes across as cold and impersonal so just not a fan, and that’s just my opinion.
    Love your blog!

  4. I too had wallpaper about 17 years ago and I also stripped it off and painted. Everything is new again.

  5. I’m probably odd man out here, but I absolutely love every bit of it! However, wallpaper is my Achilles heel. I’m still traumatized by the arduous task of removing floor-to-ceiling Victorian-style wallpaper from the horrid 1980 phase. I swore off wallpaper forever, and I’m not sure I’ve forgiven that trend enough to give it another try! 😉

  6. I too am not a huge fan of gold, but I do have a few copper and old brass items in my home. I like brass, but it has to be old, antique brass, with a nice patina. We have a few brass things in our house. A vintage stove poker set and a few brass and glass door knobs. We have an old copper tea kettle, and I love it. I would love to get a set of copper pots and pans.
I really am not a fan of cow hide patterns or animal prints in general. You will never see me wearing animal prints or see them in my home.
I actually really like wallpapered rooms if the wallpaper is a nice soft color. I love wallpapers that are faded florals and toiles. I plan on papering our master bedroom with a faded floral in blue or gray sometime in the future. By the time I do it though, it will probably be “out of style” again, but I don’t really care. We have an old farmhouse, and I think it can carry it off. I believe wallpaper is classic and beautiful in the right patterns, not just trendy.
Of course I love blue accent colors. Blue is my favorite color to decorate my home with. Blue is a fabulous neutral color that goes with everything. I also believe it to be classic, not trendy.
Now, as you’ve probably guessed, mid-century modern is not my cup of tea. 🙂 I really don’t like modern design at all, though. I am a huge fan of Gustavian, French Country, and English country cottage decor.
    Happy New Year!
    Beth.

  7. Happy New Year Jennifer!
I have to agree with Michelle. Four of the five are trends, something that will be out of style next year. But blue, oh the blue, will be with us forever. Think the ocean, the sky, peaceful, calm, happy, fun…….Blue

  8. I’ve always loved very rich antique brass accents. I noticed the extremely luxurious restrooms in restaurants have never stopped using them. They’re a classic. Also the old candlesticks blend perfect with my antique pieces of scrubbed pine from France and England. I like cow hide. I think in my arrangements it might look a bit contrived so I don’t use it. I do have a small leapord print stool and antlers……love anything that has to do with nature. Not on to wallpaper hahaha…I LOVE the right wallpaper! The big thing is it has to be paper and NOT vinyl covered. That stuff is dreadful. A nightmare to strip and looks very 80s. I have an accent wall in my bedroom wallpapered with a blue and white Scandinavian print. Right now I’m seriously considering wallpapering my black and white traditional bathroom with black and white ticking. I think it will give it more depth. I also love small spaces that feel like a cocoon. Love your interesting post. Happy 2015!

    1. Antique brass is my favorite finish! It looks fantastic with all shapes of wood and adds richness to cooler color schemes.

But I think the gold, above, looks lovely as well.

  9. Love, love the gold faucet for the kitchen sink! I will do that eventually! Great trends all of them!
Have a great New Years sweet friend.

  10. Trends are just that…trends. It’s a good thing I don’t follow them, otherwise, I would have a whole bank dedicated to kitchen and bath fixtures alone!

  11. Oh dear. I might be out of sync with the world for awhile. 🙂

I love the touches of blue but will pass on the rest. I’m a Native Texan and will never ever have cowhide real or faux in my house.

Oh well. The great thing about decor is we can all love our own thing.

  12. Hi, Jennifer. This was really interesting, I think we had a glimmer of some of it. I noticed my daughters wearing more gold jewelry, and I think the cowhide pattern became a softer, more country~ like version of the eclectic zebra stripe. and also gives the warm vibe of faux animal fur. I’ve also seen some modern takes in various rooms that make for a nice mix up…In Traditional Homes last month for example! Wow! Id love it though, reminds me of the home I grew up in! And let’s be glad we hung on to some wallpaper! Ha!

Happy New Year and hopefully we can meet up sometime this year!

  13. I love the look of brushed gold but definitely not shiny gold. I am excited that wallpaper is making a comeback. I was just in our local wallpaper and paint store going through all of the books looking for some ideas. There are some wonderful modern patterns available. I have always been a fan of wallpaper but I definitely don’t like taking it down. My husband HATES putting it up and taking it down. We won’t tell him about the new trends. I didn’t like the MCM furniture even when it was new but some homes look great with it. No cowhide for me unless it’s a faux piece. Thank you for sharing!

  14. Yes to the blue accents. No to cowhide rugs or any rugs in my house that can’t be thrown in the washing machine. I’ll keep my chrome and satin nickel fixtures, thank you, and there will be absolutely NO wallpaper in my house ever again!

  15. Thanks for sharing these trends … I like many different styles, but not a trendy person. I like wallpaper, but not taking it down and making changes. The blue leaf wallpaper behind the bed is fresh looking.
    Happy New Year.
    Audrey Z.

  16. I don’t care for the gold faucets with silver hardware together. I’m behind the times because I’m just starting to tear wallpaper off my walls and painting them. I’m going to stay with my neutral colors and the classic blue and white! Thanks for sharing.

  17. I see so many more bloggers using the brass and gold finishes. It is not me I am still liking my old chippy whites and architectural pieces. I think if you love the gold and brass so with it. I just feel like if you stay true to what you love you will always feel good about your decor. Trends come and go but what you love will stay with you forever. Some beautiful inspiration here.
