Turquoise Kitchen: Back to the 1950s

When I saw this first photo of a turquoise kitchen I knew I had to create a blog post dedicated to this vivid hue that was so popular in the 1950s. You’ve probably seen many a 50s ranch with turquoise (or pink) tile in the bathroom. Today – it’s all about this fresh color in the kitchen.

Whether it be cabinet color or tile – the intensity of turquoise can create a fun and exciting aura in your home. It looks so crisp when paired with white.

Even a craftsman home gets a fresh update with a turquoise kitchen. The cabinet color mimics the hue in the door’s stained glass window.

A kitchen in an historic home gets a shot of energy with brightly painted cabinets and shelves. Paint is always a great way to breathe new life into a room.

This is the same kitchen as the above photo. Look how great the turquoise paint looks against the red hue of the brick wall. And all those canned goods look just as appealing.

Of course, not all turquoise needs to be bold and vivid. Here,  a Mid Century Modern kitchen with a softer shade pairs with darker tile.

A farmhouse kitchen looks great in pale cabinets with warm wood floors and ceiling beams.

If flea market style is your thing, you’ll love this vintage kitchen with its pale aqua cabinets and turquoise mirror above the farmhouse sink. I’m going to feature this home on Sunday – it’s a fun house tour!

And finally, a very pale turquoise (or would you say aqua?) SMEG refrigerator. I need one of these in my life!

  1. Hi Jennifer
I love this post but I always do. Don’t we both just have wonderful taste in decorating. I live in a newish house in the country with huge gardens and I love to decorate my house. Not sure what to call the style. Traditional French Country with a bit of Farmhouse thrown in for good measure. Love to repurpose . My mind is always about three projects ahead. Waiting to call the counter people to come measure for solid surface counters and then onto subway tile. Everyone says I should blog but I know that it is hard work. Thanks again.

  2. We had a cape cod style home that was built in 1953. The bathroom had tourmaline ceramic tile in the bathroom. In the 80s it was not a popular color so I used white and raspberry accents. And, of course, wallpaper and border. I put it up to stay. It was a lot of elbow grease to remove it. But I love the samples you’ve shown.

  3. In the 60s, my grandmother had
a vivid turquoise fridge and stove… Everyone had an opinion ~ none of them nice! I thought they were gorgeous 😉

  4. I painted my storage building turquoise and I love it. My grandson came by and I said “how do you like my paint”? He said “” are you going to leave it that color”? The family has gotten used to it.
