Updated Kitchen and Dining Nook from the 1940s

You’re in for a treat today! I think you’re going to love this updated kitchen and dining nook by Tchotchkes Design Studio found in a beautiful home built in the 1940s. A unique archway gives a nod to the home’s birth date while the kitchen is functional for today’s busy lifestyle.

Dark kitchen cabinets look richly beautiful against a hardwood floor with a small oriental rug.

The small, updated kitchen is kept light and bright with the generous use of white paint, counter tops, and subway tiles. Note the vintage mint green clock above the dining nook.

I like the choice of dark hardware that blends seamlessly into the cabinetry. A golden goose-neck faucet becomes the focal point in front of the window above the sink. There’s just the right balance of charm and elegance in this small kitchen.

A bay window allows plenty of natural light to stream in through the dining nook, flooding the updated kitchen with airy appeal. I think dark paint for the cabinets was the right way to go in a room filled with so much light.

The updated kitchen is appealing from every angle. I like that a modern white table was used in the dining nook, along with a simple light fixture.

Details make all the difference in an updated kitchen. Marbled stone counter tops, an apron sink, herbs at the window, and cutting boards against the back splash all create charming appeal in this uncluttered kitchen.

What a cheery spot to enjoy your morning coffee or an intimate meal. Seeing the eucalyptus centerpiece is making me wonder if my own eucalyptus in the garden has grown big enough for clippings. It’s such a simple, pretty option – and fragrant, too!

  1. I really love this kitchen/dining space. I actually have always preferred a galley-type kitchen with a dining area at the end nearby, especially one with a nice window and a view. I’ve never had a need for large open spaces for entertaining, so this type of home would suit me just fine. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I love this kitchen its perfect to have when your kids have grown and only come once and awhile. I got rid of my big bar and am looking forward to a nook.

  3. Stunning. Love it all. I always like the look of an oriental rug in the kitchen. We would spill on it, but maybe a washable one. I have seen those a lot on pinterest. That doorway cutout style is to die for.

    1. Hi Jillian! I really like this kitchen, too, and am also a fan or oriental rugs in the kitchen. My daughter has a washable rug. I’ve considered getting one myself. The doorway cutout is what first caught my eye in this kitchen!

  5. Like the updated look with the dark cozy feeling. Bright white nice contrast, but bare windows too stark and cold.
