Wood Slice Garland: Make Your Own

A couple days ago I shared a few winter decorating details in my family room. One of those details is a wood slice garland that I made. It was an exciting project for me because it’s the first time I’ve ever used a cordless drill to make something. Don’t laugh. It’s true. I’m not much of a tool person, leaving those projects to my hubby. But I decided to step out of my comfort zone and ended up feeling silly because it was so easy! I hadn’t planned make a wood slice garland. Hubby and I were in the craft store; I saw a bag of wood slices and thought they’d make a cute, earthy garland. And I wanted something to drape over my ceiling tin.

Two bags of various-sized wood slices were used for this project, along with some twine. The big wood block acts as a base for the drilling.

Place the wood slice on the large block and drill a hole in the center of the slice. I noticed that the wood slices are softest at the center of the knot in the wood. I drilled my holes there instead of the exact middle of the slice.

The hardest part of drilling was holding the drill. It gets heavy when you have this many slices.

Grab your twine and thread it through the hole. This is easier to do if you wrap a piece of tape around the end of the twine to keep it from fraying.

When you’re done threading the wood slices on the twine, create a loop at the ends for hanging and secure with knots. I hung mine with my favorite greenery garland. I love the silvery leaves; they create the perfect complement to the rustic wood slices.

On the vertical piece of the garland, I tied knots under each set of wood slices to keep them in place.
