Friday Finds #11: Home Chores and More
Summer is gradually slipping through my fingers and there’s nothing I can do about it. Sigh. I always start to feel a little melancholic this time of year, but I’m trying to fight the feeling and enjoy these gorgeous August days as much as I can.
This week I’ve been obsessed with planning short getaways throughout the year. I had hoped to go to Greece but that’s not happening anytime soon now, so little jaunts here and there will have to suffice.
My next trip is planned for Knoxville, Tennessee over Labor Day weekend with my daughter Stephanie and granddaughter Zoe. Zoe is the one who joined me for last year’s pre-Christmas Chicago trip. We need to be careful about mask-wearing and social distancing while there. I’ll be sure to take pictures of the Smoky Mountains and pretty homes in the area.
This weekend I hope to can some peach preserves for the first time ever. If you have any tips, I’d love to have you share them in the comments below. Peaches are one of my favorite fruits, along with sweet cherries.
I managed to get a little reading and discovering during this busy week at work. I hope you like what I found!
This week’s Friday Finds …
While exploring nearby places to visit, I stumbled upon this lovely post about historic neighborhoods in America. Have you visited any of these locations?
My daughter Bridget and I both want to replace our kitchen counter tops. I found this great article that features non-marble counter tops. I still think I’m going with butcher block, though.
And speaking of the kitchen, I found some cute dish-washing accessories that make doing the dishes more fun (is that even possible?).
While we’re talking about home chores, we might as well include a mention about laundry. This beautiful, country style laundry room is sure to make the task more pleasant.
Preserving summer flowers is a great way to keep your floral favorites on display year-round. Stephanie at Garden Therapy shares how to preserve flowers and leaves alike, so you can use this tutorial when the trees turn color in the fall.
I hope you enjoyed this week’s round up of discoveries on the internet. It’s fun to find new things to explore!
Please give every detail to butcher block!
Ie, care, cost, how to measure.
Size, thickness?
Can a butcher block just lay on an existing counter?
Thanks!!!!!
What do you suppose those circles on the cobblestone sidewalk in Philly are? And, gotta love the butcherblock countertops. I’m tired of my black granite and would love butcherblock. So warm and inviting. I’d love to see and hear about yours. I’d always thought Ikea might be the place to get them, (low cost) but I was looking at them there recently and the affordable ones look like what you’d get for the money. They do have some better ones, but of course, they were expensive. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with. Love your posts. As I’m scrolling through my daily email and deleting, yours is one I NEVER DELETE. It’s one I always save and come back to to savor. Like saving the dessert for last. Yummy!!
Thank you for this post, especially about the counter tops. It is extremely helpful. I am hoping to replace ours soon as well. Have a great weekend.
I had butcher block on the island at my former home. I loved it so much! I enjoyed the occasional mineral oil application followed by waxing. It gave it a kind of natural luster and prevented stains and dryness. In my new to me house I have that granite that resembles a leopard print except it has yellow in it. Erg!
Lovely tour of the historic places.
I personally went with quartz for my counters 3 years ago when I redid my kitchen and love them, so easy to maintain.
Stephanie from Garden Therapy is wonderful I get her in my inbox too, she has a special place with me cause she lives within about 50 miles of me give or take. Her practical tips for gardening and all the different uses for herbs and such are a delight.
So thank you for such a wonderful post.
Your kitchen is so pretty ! I love the number of windows that you have on your sink wall. I went with quartz for my counters and also love the easy care, though butcher block is lovely and would look great with your white cabinets. I also went with the Kohler Whitehaven “short apron” apron front sink – and I love it! The “short apron” style can be installed on a standard sink base cabinet if that is a look you like. I have an older kitchen and love the refreshed look with my new counters and sink. I also retrofitted a cabinet with plate rail and cup hooks – inspired by kitchens like yours:)
Thank you these are so much fun to explore. Have a great weekend and i want butcher block countertops too, i love wood worn or new.
