The Best Cozy Cabin and More: Friday Finds
Finally things are cooling off here in Chicagoland and it’s starting to feel like the beginning of fall. There are so many things I want to do in the last few months of 2026, like take a Chicago architecture boat tour, visit Abe Lincoln’s home in Springfield, and explore neighborhoods I haven’t discovered yet. We’ll see how many I check off my bucket list.
I’m going to start this week’s line-up of treasures with a super warm and cozy cabin that I fell in love with. Of course, it’s located in Maine because I seem to gravitate towards homes in my favorite state. I had to scroll through this one a few times to take it all in.
This past Sunday I wrote a post about my daughter Bridget’s new home that she’ll be moving into in April. My son is also building a new home but he’s working with an architect first. His one must-have is a black exterior. I’ve seen black houses and while they’re not for everyone, some of them are pretty spectacular. As luck would have it, I came across a feature dedicated to 30 homes with black exteriors.
Hubby wants more shelving in our house to accommodate the growing pile of books I’ve been collecting. I do plan to read them all, but I understand he doesn’t want them piled here and there. This week I came across this charming library and thought it’d be nice to have a cute room like this dedicated to books.
If you’re a fan of a little quirky decorating, you’ll enjoy this farmhouse fixer that cleverly blends a mix of modern and vintage. It put a smile on my face when I saw it.
On my other blog, Pond and Garden, I shared my favorite ornamental grasses that look great in a fall garden. They add just a touch of color along with architectural appeal in the landscape.
A favorite state to visit in the fall is Vermont, and it just so happens I discovered this quaint, historic home with the best wood floors ever!

I was delighted to see the home featured on your blog post email….I’ve ben reading a book which tells the story of Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln. Their house and the story of building it features quite large in their earlier years. Reading about it has me now wanting to visit the house in your picture!
The cabin and farmhouse fixer were so interesting and full of idea’s. As for the black exterior I have seen 2 of those and my concern would be how long it would take for that black to fade. If that does not bother you then they are unusual and stand out.
