Wonderful William Morris Wallpaper, a Cabin + More: Friday Finds
Kids went back to school this week and it seems too early. “Back in my day” we didn’t start the new school year until after Labor Day. And when I moved to my current town, kids didn’t start school until after the local August festival held the third weekend of the month. But now the kids gather at the bus stop the week before the festival. I don’t know why the date keeps getting moved forward but if I were a kid, I wouldn’t like it at all. Maybe the parents pushed for the earlier start date so home life could return to some semblance of normalcy. Whatever the case, an early school start makes me feel like summer is being cut short even though the temperatures are still reaching the upper 70s and 80s.
Some of my blog friends are already showcasing fall decorations but I struggle to do the same. I know most people love autumn (I do, too), but I’m just not ready to say goodbye to my favorite season. Which camp do you “fall” into? Do you mourn the loss of summer or do you celebrate the arrival of autumn?
I feel like today’s Friday Finds are neither fall nor summer related, but can be enjoyed and appreciated any time of the year. Take a look!
How about we start with a tour of a gorgeous Iowa home with a cool library and a dining room that features William Morris wallpaper?
Enjoy this collection of rooms designed by Amy Berry, which includes floral wallpaper and chintz fabric on furniture.
Have you heard of net curtains? House and Garden shares the simple beauty of these pretty curtains.
Here’s a charming post about tips for artfully restoring an old house. I found a few ideas to incorporate in my own home.
A few years ago, fiddle leaf figs were all the rage in plant décor. But now I’m thinking – what about an olive tree? They’re so airy looking. Here’s a article on how to grow an olive tree indoors in case you’re in the mood to add one to your home.
Who doesn’t love the warmth and hygge vibe of a cozy cabin? Check out this Sewanee “cabin” in Tennessee that’s both rustic and elegant all at once. Honestly, it’s beautifully decorated and you might just fall in love.
Love fall but I’m with you, don’t take my summer! 😂
As a retired teacher in the south, definitely after Labor Day! Sending kids to school when it’s 104 and up is not cool! (Pun intended) I need more lazy boat days with my grand!
I definitely regret the passing of summer time . I love the sun even the hot summers of Texas. It’s probably because I was a teacher for many, many years… but, I do love the Fall decor as an antique dealer👍 Danielle
I am ready to move on to fall. I love fall decor and fall fashion, always have. The first day that feels crisp out it makes me happy.
Yeah, that Sewanee cabin is seriously gorgeous. I thought that the apparatus used to shut the transom window, in one of the bedrooms, in the Iowa home was really interesting. That home was beautifully done also- simple but elegantly cozy. Thanks for giving info on indoor olive trees. It led me to info on having an indoor lemon tree, which I have been thinking about doing. Now that I know they need 8-10 hours of sun each day, and I don’t have ANY south facing windows; it probably isn’t going to happen. Sad face.
Retired teacher here. The early start to school began when the states all began to use standardized testing for various reasons. By starting sooner, they get a jump on test prep, as those tests usually occur in the spring, and it’s all about doing well on them. It puts them a few weeks ahead of where they’d be if school started after Labor Day. So much is test driven, including curriculum, of course, but also the kinds of books students read, what they write about (my poor 6th graders were stuck with a lot of nonfiction instead of using their imaginations), what they study in social studies, how teachers and entire schools are evaluated, etc. Tough luck to the kids going back in that late summer heat, I guess!
Loved the Iowa tour, beautiful old house done very nicely and of course the cabin. It’s been very hot here in Oklahoma so I just want a little cooler weather. I would love anything under 95, not 100 every day.
