How to Quickly Update a Porch Glider ~ Inspire Me Challenge
Today is the day of the final reveal of my porch glider update. Last week I mentioned that I’m joining 12 other bloggers in the “Inspire Me Challenge” for a simple DIY project. You can see all their projects too, listed at the end of this post. Are you ready to see my new and improved porch glider?
Here she is! A fresh coat of paint and new cushions give her life and color she didn’t have before.
This is what she looked like before. Shabby but definitely not chic. I covered her bad paint job with a quilt or throw but she wasn’t very cushy and comfortable. I found her about 12 years ago for $40 at a local yard sale.
Gone are her rusty chains and dirty spots! I started by washing down my porch glider and scrubbing her clean. Then I spray painted her with white satin spray paint by Rustoleum. Hubby asked why I didn’t brush paint the glider but that would’ve taken too long. Just follow the instructions on the can … it’s so simple even my 8-year old grandson helped with the spray painting. Then let dry for a couple hours and repeat, if needed.
I had every intention of sewing the cushions for my porch glider, but fate wasn’t havin’ it. My mother, who has Alzheimer’s, had a bit of a spell so my time was a little monopolized taking her to the doctor and making sure she was okay. And then I had an improptu request to watch my granddaughter for a day. So … I had to conserve time and resort to store-bought cushions.
I did have fun taking this wee one on the hunt for porch glider cushions. We saw this very cool hut thing at Home Goods for about $1500. I didn’t buy it, although my granddaughter would’ve loved me forever if I had.
Next we went to Pier 1 and found this fun swing! But I didn’t buy this either. Had to stay focused on getting the cushions! We’re painting the exterior of our house in a couple weeks so I kept the colors in mind while looking, and luckily Pier 1 was having a sale.
When I saw the Loftonaire collection at Pier 1, I knew this was it!
I’ve been drawn to apple green lately and these pillows were callin’ my name.
After all that scrubbing, painting, and shopping, I figured I deserved a treat from The Sugar Path.
This is called a Do-Cup … half donut and half cupcake. Yum!!
The center of this Do-Cup has a decadent chocolate center. Mmm.
Oh wait … this post is about my porch glider!
After 2 coats of fresh spray paint and new cushions, I think she’s looking pretty good. I actually sat on my updated porch glider while working on this blog post. There’s still some work to do out here on the porch so stay tuned! I plan to spend lots of time out here on our front porch this summer.

What a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the day! I always have great intentions of making pillows too. It was nice to hear buying ones is perfectly okay. 😉
Thanks for the inspiration!

Your sweet glider looks perfect. I want to lounge on the porch with you and eat those delicious do-cups! x
What a great place to spend a warm afternoon gliding away. Love the new cushions, and your granddaughter is just adorable.
Your porch is looking so inviting! And those donut/cupcakes things are killing me. Yum!
Beautiful! Practical. I have to say that although I love Shabby, it’s not really practical. Love the glider and the cushions make it look so inviting. With the yummies and a good book, I could stay there all day on this holiday!
The glider looks great, love the relaxing colors of the blue and green. Looks like a wonderful place to sit back and watch the world go by.
Looks brand new, Jennifer! Love the ease of the spray painting if you can do it. Did you even spray the chains? Your granddaughter is so cute. The cushions and pillows you wound up getting are very pretty. I love the soft colors.
Your porch looks amazing Jennifer!!! It looks so inviting:). Happy Memorial Day! Jen
It’s so pretty. I need to recover my cushion again this year but dread the whole process. I love the colors of the ones you found. You may have inspired me to get sewing.
Oh gosh, my heart is crushing on the Loftonaire collection at Pier 1 cushions you picked out. The glider makeover looks as good as the donut cupcakes no doubt taste.
I love it Jennifer, those are the colors I have been using in my décor, so bright and cherry! Great job.
xoxo
Looks great Jennifer! Those cupcake donut things were a little distracting. YUM! I am loving the blues and greens together this year. I recently used those colors in my bed and bath. Bless you for taking care of your Mom. I know it can’t be easy. Looks like you and your granddaughter had fun. (you seem too young to have grandkids) Have a good week 🙂
Your mother is way more important than DIY cushions and your granddaughter is so beautiful! I just love how fresh and inviting your glider looks now. You are all set to relax and watch the world go by. Enjoy…
Love the colors! Excellent paint job!! Just beautiful! Remember to take time to enjoy your beautiful porch!
This looks so cozy! I want to snuggle right up and take a summer’s nap 🙂
Jennifer, I adore your glider makeover!!! That will be such a sweet spot to relax during the lazy days of summer!
I feel terrible that I never commented! I read it and entered a comment but I must have forgotten to post it. I want to tell you that your transformation turned out so pretty! I love the colors! Made me wish I was sitting there on the glider eatin a treat too!
Have you ever tried plasti-dip on wood? It works very well and is easy to peal off. I’ll have a bite of that do-cup if you don’t mind!
The glider is perfect. Now I know what to do with my dads glider sitting on his front porch. We gave it to my parents about 15 years ago and he does’nt sit outside anylonger since his is widowed. . He said I could have it and I didn’t know what to do with it so I have not brought it home, besides I haven’t needed it yet. My husband will want to sand it and the whole nine yards. Your porch looks fabulous and the glider with those cushions look brand new! Makes me want to come over and sit a spell!
Love your glider! I have been debating how to redo my bathroom. I read another blog this morning that highlighted apple green. When I clicked on your apple green ideas that was it! An apple green bathroom is in my future. Thanks again for your inspiration.
