It’s Time to See My Simple Pastel Living Room at Christmas

My living room, which used to be the dining room, has undergone some changes. While there are still a few finishing touches left to make, I decided to share it with you today since I’ve already decked it out for Christmas. I hope you enjoy it! Sharing photos of your own home can be a bit nerve-wracking—will people love it, hate it, or just find it “meh”? LOL. I think every blogger feels a bit of that vulnerability when showcasing their personal space. So without further ado, here’s a peek at my pastel living room. The hydrangea picture is from a local artist who cuts pieces of thick paper, paints them, and then pieces them together to create a mural. It’s hard to see that detail until you get up close. She has so many great works of art, but this one was perfect for this space above my new blue chair from Kirkland’s.

True confession: I wasn’t going to put up a Christmas tree this year. Since we spend our family holiday in Galena, there’s really no need for me to have a tree other than to make the house festive. As you well know, decorating a tree is a lot of work and I don’t think anyone likes taking it down. But I remembered I had a small tree so I stuffed it in a basket and put it in this spot where a side table is needed (I’m still looking for one).

The family room is through the open doorway and I recently painted it a sage green (it used to be dark gray). Before I show more of it, I’m swapping out pillows and artwork to create an English cottage vibe.

I started to decorate this tree but decided I liked it better naked with just a few strings of light. So the ornaments came off. In addition to that side table, I’m looking for artwork for the wall above the gray console table. The colors in my simple pastel living room are Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams on the board and batten, and Coastal Cottage by Benjamin Moore on the upper walls.

Ice punch poinsettias are my favorite so you’ll always see them in my home during the holiday. Ice punch has light pink centers surrounded by red. The upholstered bench is also from Kirkland’s and the glitter village in the background is from Target.

My blog friend, Kelly Elko, turned me on to these light-up paper houses. I saw them on her Instagram account and had to have them. I have another set on my dining room buffet.

The pale minty green loveseat from Birch Lane is super comfortable and adds a fun pop of color in here. It’s available in several colors. I have my eye on some pillows from Green Row that will look great in here but I’m waiting until after Christmas to get them.

From this angle of my pastel living room you can see into the dining room that used to be the sitting room. I chose the mint green fabric on the loveseat because it’s a lighter shade of the blue-green in the dining room. The quilted hanging is also from a local artist. I’ve been trying to add more original art to my home. I used these handy wall clips to hang it.

Stepping back reveals a better view of this space, which is super awkward and hard to logically arrange furniture. You have to walk through the living room to get to the dining and kitchen rooms. And the front door is to the right of the bench so I used furniture to make that space the entry. So between traffic patterns, windows, and doors, this room is always a challenge.

My prison chickens are an original contemporary folk art piece by Marian Baker from Alabama. I found her art at an art show in nearby Geneva. This painting was the inspiration for the colors in the room. You can see the beige, pink, and green, along with just a touch of mustardy yellow. Thus the yellow pillows on the wooden bench. I found the bird vase at a local shop and its shape reminded me of the chickens’ shape. A pair of wooden Christmas trees add just a touch of holiday cheer.

Although I miss the more maximalist approach to Christmas decorating, I’m glad I kept my pastel living room simple for the holidays. Now I don’t have to dread taking it all down. Clean-up should be quick and easy this year.

  1. I need a smaller loveseat for my living room and have not seen one I really like until yours. New? Maker? Was it available in other colors? Thank you for your inspiration.

    1. Hi Dee! I meant to include a link to the loveseat in the post. I just added it. I got it from Birch Lane and it’s available in about 80 colors! It was a little more than I wanted to spend but it’s worth the cost. You can find it here: https://rstyle.me/+p13KhLGXyJGYu2tAZ4WiEQ. I have to disclose that I receive a small commission when I refer people to products if they buy them.  🙂

  2. What a change from your “moody” colors, right?!! I love that you have gone light and happy! AND the w-i-d-e view of the rooms helped me to finally/sorta visualize the floor plan of your home. (I would still love for you to post a draftsman type floor plan)
I’m so happy that your family can get away together for Christmas! Those trips create memories and the kind of interactions that seal families together forever. After 12 years of trying to coordinate work and sports schedules, our family spent this Thanksgiving week all together in Wytheville, VA; where the Gibboneys first planted their roots here in America well over 200 years ago. I, like you, did minimal decorating this year before we left so that we came home to Christmas d-o-n-e. Thanks for sharing your happy spaces. Your courage to share is appreciated more than you know.

    1. Hi Deb! Your Thanksgiving in VA sounds like it was wonderful. You’re making me think that a family trip to Plymouth, MA for Thanksgiving is a great idea. It’s probably crowded though. Maybe someday I’ll get around to doing a layout of the house but I’m not making any promises. LOL.

  3. Love the simplicity!! I’m at that point in life. I really appreciate it for its simple beauty. Love your colors, and sage green is my favorite. I agree the tree needs no ornaments!

  4. It all looks so pretty and love the colors you have chosen. I too go to one of my sons for Christmas and do less decorating than I use to.

  5. Beautiful as usual. I love those paper houses. Where did you get them? They would look beautiful on my dining buffet. Kim XOXO

  6. Jennifer, this is elegant and serene and welcoming, all while looking like real folks live here. Itʻs beautiful! I love how you are bringing in art from local crafters. I decorate with hand made quilts, silk paintings and hand made art as well. There is nothing like it to bring a sense of vitality to a space. Thanks for creating beauty and sharing about it! Leslie
