How to Deck the Front Door for the Holidays: A Dazzling Christmas Wreath
Garden centers across the country are stocked and ready to go for the holiday season. You might find you’re bombarded by tree and wreath ads from your local nursery. My favorite local greenhouse features the most amazing poinsettias that I like to purchase for inside my home. And of course, when it comes to the front door, there’s nothing like a dazzling Christmas wreath to say welcome and Happy Holidays! See today’s collection for ideas and inspiration for your own front door.
The first wreath is traditional and a great choice no matter what your front door looks like. I personally find wreaths with a mix of greens to be more interesting than wreaths that use just one type of evergreen. A few pinecones and red berries add even more interest, which you can add on your own if you can’t find a wreath that already has these items attached to it.
When you have a brightly colored front door, usually less is more when it comes to your holiday wreath. A big red bow is the only adornment needed.
Want a fragrant wreath for your holiday? Add dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks. Berries and pinecones can be found in the woods if you want to add them. I love this wreath – and the vintage knocker on this beautiful blue door.
Go for something unique this year with a dazzling Christmas wreath made of sticks and brown Spanish moss. Use a hot glue gun to add a deer’s head and other decorations.
Even a small wreath looks good on a front door. Use decorative ribbon to hang it and create the illusion of more height.
Shiny baubles always look pretty against evergreens. Purchase shatter-proof ornaments so you can safely use them outdoors. To tie your Christmas decorating theme together, use some of the ornaments that you use on your Christmas tree to decorate your wreath. You can even use the same ribbon on your wreath that you use on your Christmas presents. A collection of glossy, holly leaves finishes off the look.
If you’re nervous about embellishing a wreath, take a class at a local garden center. Many of them offer create-a-wreath workshops as a way to get you into their store. Their staff can assist you in choosing and arranging adornments on the wreath.
For simplicity’s sake, you can also choose a pre-made metal shape like this star-type wreath and attach a few pieces of greenery (faux or real) to it. If you want to keep it really simple, choose a floral pick that already has several stems of greenery and use floral wire to attach the pick to the wreath. Hang your dazzling Christmas wreath with a pretty ribbon and you’re good to go!
Got an old pair of ice skates in the garage or basement? Hang them on the door and layer a holiday wreath over them for a festive look. You can even hang a few ornaments on the wreath for a bit of whimsy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so feel free to be creative.

How about red berry wreaths? They pop against a pair of ornate, dark blue doors.
Here’s another red berry wreath that’s perfect for the holiday season. It features a few greens and a big red bow.
I love the slightly frosty look of this next wreath. A mix of greens are used to create interesting texture and fullness.
Why stop at one wreath on the front door? You can add wreaths to every window, along with some draping garland. I had wreaths on all my front windows one year. Although I loved the look, it was hard hanging the second floor wreaths. Not to mention, whenever the wind blew, the wreaths would bang a little against the windows.
Whatever you choose to do with your door this holiday season, there’s a lot of inspiration and ideas for creating your own dazzling Christmas wreath.
