Roadside Wildflowers Picked Fresh for the Home
For the longest time I’ve been a huge fan of fresh-picked roadside wildflowers. I love their crazy, natural beauty. I’m just in awe of nature and believe that all its intricacy and variations are proof that God exists. When I gaze upon roadside flowers I appreciate the color combinations and the casual way they dot the landscape … not like the formality of professionally arranged flowers … but so much prettier!
I was so excited this week when I saw hundreds of cow parsley with its lacy white flowers populating the country roadside.
Interspersed with the cow parsley are dainty purple flowers, which I’m guessing are wild geraniums.
Yellow stamens pop against the purple petals of this delicate, roadside wildflower while a fuzzy flower bud dangles below.
Yellow and purple are opposite each other on the color wheel so they naturally look good together. Is it just me or does it look like a heart has been drawn on each petal? So many things to admire in nature!
These wildflowers come from the side of the road – that strip of land that belongs to the city or county.
One time not too long ago when I was out gathering a bouquet of roadside wildflowers, a police car pulled up behind me (hubby was driving and was waiting for me to get back in the car). I didn’t know if I was going to be in trouble with John Law or not.
It hadn’t really occurred to me that the local government might not like me picking wildflowers from the side of the road. After all, my tax dollars help to pay for someone to mow that grass and clean the trash up in that area.
I nervously got back into the car while Mr. Policeman patiently waited.
We were in a no-pass zone which is why he didn’t drive around us.
I’m happy to report that the officer didn’t pull me over for picking roadside wildflowers from the fairway and can rest assured that my roadside wildflower picking days are far from over!

How luvly. I too am an admirer of wild flowers. Every morning on my walks I want to stop and get some. But the biggest patches are halfway on my almost 3 mile route… I’d have to walk with them clutched in my sweaty little fist. I have to sort that out… I do want some.

A woman after my own heart…stopping to pick wildflowers on the side of the road… I’ve been eyeing some purple thistles all this week, but have been on my way to someplace with a deadline each time I saw them. Tomorrow may be the day I stop to cut a bouquet for the house. Your photos are just stunning…great job… I’m still working on my photo skills.

Good Morning Jennifer, There is nothing like a field of wild flowers to make me smile. The combination of the Queen Anne’s Lace and the Wild Geranium is so beautiful. Mother Nature knows how to get things just right.
I am so glad you did not get into trouble for picking flowers, like you, it would not have occurred to me….. something to remember for the future.

Very pretty, I never pay for flowers in the Summer time. I can get so many wildflowers for free.
Roadside wild flowers are always a pretty idea, and they are perfect for that pitcher.

I love wildflowers that grow alongside the road too. Where we live I wouldn’t dare to try and stop and cut any the roads are to thin and winding it would be dangerous. Love your flowers that you cut and brought inside to place in that lovely pitcher of yours.

I wondered about picking the flowers even before you mentioned it. I think in California it is illegal, but I’m not sure. I never wantd to test it.

I am lucky enough to live in the countryside, and absolutely adore all the wild flowers that we see as we travel around our area, but have never actually stopped and picked any of them, as memories from childhood, tell me that they don’t last long when clutched in a sweaty little hand. However, now as an adult, and having seen your beautiful display, I shall make a point of stopping on the way home next time I go out, and picking some flowers from the lane leading up to my home. Thank you for the inspiration!
